Bye bye 2017! Hello 2018!
A message from your friendly neighborhood silver fox.
It's that time again! Crazy to think it's already New Year again.
This journal is gonna have two parts, some remarks about the past year, and some plans and hopes for this new year.
2017 was a very interesting year for me.
I completed my final year project for engineering this year. It was quite a challenge, but I managed to create my first synthesiser! It's by no means anything particularly useful yet, only illustrating the viability of the concept. But I would like to make an improved version for myself someday. I learned a lot in the process, both about the project and field of audio synthesis, as well as myself.
I still have another year of studies left, but with the project and a few of the difficult modules out of the way, things will be a lot calmer. So I'll be able to do more stuff this year!
I managed to complete my pic-a-week challenge! One drawing each and every week. Even with the couple of close calls, it ended up being a lot of fun.
Got to try some new techniques here and there, drew some species I haven't tried before and generally had a good time.
Also got a new laptop a week or so ago! After 5 years of service, all the reports, projects, games and art took its toll on my old Acer laptop. The keyboard is pretty much toast, with many missed keypresses. And one of its two GPUs have been dead for a few months, so it hasn't been running on all cylinders for quite a while. Even on idle, it can burn one's hand if you touch the exhaust outlet. Battery barely lasts an hour too.
Replacing it is a new Dell Inspiron 15 7577, with ample amounts of power to handle the sort of work I do and the games I play. It even has a fancy IPS display, so I have way less worries about colour accuracy when I move a fraction of a degree like on my old laptop. (And now I can finally say my New Year's resolution is 1920x1080 xD) And in spite of having proper hardware, it doesn't look like a gamer's wet dream, so I can use it in meetings and stuff without being "that guy". Really like the external design!
I also acquired a small Novation MIDI controller, which I want to use to get into making music.
So far I've just been making random noises in Ableton Live, but I'm learning about music production in the process.
So, for this new year, I have some goals I want to reach again.
For art, I'm going to do something similar to last year, and draw at least one drawing every two weeks. Pic-a-fortnight! The reason for two weeks instead of weekly is so that I can focus on quality more. While I did manage some nice pieces for pic-a-week most of the time, there were some pieces I felt were lacking. So I want to take a little more time with the entries this year in order to have nicer results. I'll still do some sketches in between if I can, but the actual entries would be properly detailed pieces. Also want to do more commissions and art trades! (After finishing the few commissions I already have, of course)
For music, I want to, well, get into making music. At least make a song or two, mostly electronic. (No vocals plz, I can't sing)
For electronics, is kind of related to music. I want to build another synthesiser, but a more conventional and therefore useful one! Likely modular or at least semi modular.
So yeah, Happy New Year everyone!
May you all have an awesome 2018, and best of luck with your goals and resolutions.
