I like it when patreon's offer art rewards or voting. I personally seek out those with enticing rewards.

I'm sure that most people dislike paywalls.

I like when an artist eventually releases art after a certain time. I hate artists that stay behind a paywall to even view any of their art. Honestly that’s it for me. Monthly tips har is just an added bonus for artist you want to support

Yes! Almost all independent creators use it, it's great. Sadly lot of furries misunderstand it because a few abuse it for a paywall instead of the patronage system it is meant to be. But this unjustified bad reputation of Patreon is exclusive to furries.

I prefer to commission artists directly, but I certainly can't begrudge someone for using a different profit model. ^^

I'll second this. Trust me, if I like an artist's work I'll commission them and pay whatever it takes and more. But Patreon is not for me personally. If you do it and make money from it though, then hell yeah!

The thing with that is that commissions aren't reliable as a main source of money. There are months where the artist gets a lot of money, and months where the artist gets none. I think Patreon is a great way of steady income for an artist!

Doing commissions and having a Patreon are two completely unrelated things, and as such they aren't mutually exclusive either.

Patreon is a way to get support/donations for doing your own thing, while taking commissions is a form of business. Patron lets you paint what _you_ want to paint, and still not starve to death, while commissions require you to paint what others tell you to paint.

The fact that _some_ people abuse Patreon for a paywall, which it was never meant to be, does not change this.

Main perks I try to get is when There's a monthly image on the tier you can get from the artist. Usually a sketch or linework.

I come at it as an artist and a consumer. I really like seeing WIPs and video process stuff on Patreon, and I get excited when I see that artists I want to support have those as an option. So, this is more the artist talking, cause I really like to see other folks' process and it helps me figure out how I'd like to go about my own process, and/or it's just a neat lightbulb moment of how someone does a particular thing with their art. It can be really fun to see that unfold!

As a consumer: Early access! I'm a patron to a couple folks for the early access to their artwork, and sometimes exclusive access to alternative versions of art/select illustrations and that sort. But, if I really like an artist and I just want to support 'em and I have a bit to spare, I'll chip in a dollar or two. I have no set goal on "what I can get" from them - all I want is for them to keep making art, and that it's the art they'd like to be making! :)

Patreon as a monthly tip jar is nice usually.

I'm a big fan of sketch commission tiers! I like getting steady commissions delivered within a month. Easy to budget for and also an good way to get art of all my characters from one artist, spread over a few months :D

Mainly as a tip jar, for me. But getting early/full-resolution art is a bonus.

as an artist, what attracts me a lot to another artist's patreon is WIPs, process videos, and a high-paywall tier of personal mentorship [hypothetically speaking]

Usually as a tip jar, but some perks can be nice.

i like it as a "tip jar" with bonuses (seeing art early/alternate versions/works in progress) i dislike times gated exclusives (ie you must be subscribed during a specific month to see it or you never get to see it) and the "my little paysite" mentality i'd give some examples of good/bad but i think that would break site rules
