The list of "con" points in that article is a fairly severe underrepresentation of the risks. In recent years, a number of controlled studies have given a much better quantitative understanding of the risks and benefits of neutering. For example, it's true that there is an increased risk of testicular cancer in uncastrated dogs. But if you look at the actual risk level of testicular cancer, you find that the amount of "dog quality life" lost to it is actually very small. But here's the rub – testicular cancer decreases with castration (obviously). But, for example, prostate cancer goes increases, and prostate cancer is much nastier.

I looked pretty deeply into this before getting a dog. For female dogs, it's hard to say – the risks and benefits of spaying seem to be about equally balanced. For males, the scientific evidence is considerably clearer: if we're speaking purely from the standpoint of the physical health of the dog, then castration is more likely to have negative consequences than positive, and anyone who says otherwise is working from obsolete information.

Of course, that leaves out a whole lot of aesthetic and social factors, which are the dog owner's own choice. Here in Switzerland, it's common not to neuter, and it's not a problem: dogs are generally kept well and under excellent control. Untrained dogs are rare, and anybody who habitually lets their dog stray will be regarded as an incompetent idiot, and probably told so to their face. I've never seen a dog straying in this city, and I've never heard of anyone ending up with an unwanted litter. Gotta love a society that does personal responsibility right. :)

If you check yourself for testicular tumors regularly it is very easy to do the same for your pet.

I think the greater issue at hand is the culturally accepted practice to kill animals as a management technique whether domestic or wild.

80% of dogs in the world live in the their ecological niche and go about their lives on the periphery of human settlements scavenging human waste, living and dying with minimal intervention from humanity. Western cultures are the exception and have disrupted this natural process in the name of public health and canine fanciers. The price is their total subjugation and disruption of their lives as natural selection is tossed to the side.

A popular idea is to be the pack leader and be the dominate animal in your so called pack. In the west, we already dominate all aspects of their lives with the price of true freedom being death at the hand of municipalities. Your tax dollars at work.
