My Latest Story... So Far!
Sorry, it’s not done yet! But it will be at some point! I’m taking quite an interest in writing this. It’s dark stuff, but I think it’s going pretty well. So tell me what you think of it, if you have time.
Smoke blasted through the air, a Hellish gargantuan flame singeing burnt-up feathers into a nearly gaseous ash. Birds disintegrated far before their bodies could hit the newly charred stone. Bones and half-tact skulls were laced with the veins of a putrid fire. An entire city of stone and iron, which was thought by many to be safe from destruction, now slowly vanquished within a fierce fiery storm. The stars and Moons were masked, storm clouds gathered supernaturally, almost in a sentient manner. Black smog twirled it's way over the center of the public’s once fine District. Red-orange cracks of lightning flung out in unusual lingering patterns, leaving a long trail of blackened havoc. Amongst the rubble, a small dark-furred canid child hid in what was left of the corner of her home, holding a miraculously undestroyed stuffed beaver in her arm. The toy provided little comfort, but was better than nothing. She held the stitched plushy closely to her chest. Her clothes were layered with a thick dark grey dust, which covered most of the rubble and debris around her. There she huddled between the corner of an entire wall that had been blasted across the city, which left just a lone corner. All she could do was cry, her tears gathering soot and blood as they climbed down her face.
Loud explosions through the darkness caused her to jump through her helpless whimpers. There was nothing she could do. It all came down to one word, one that she screamed through her sobs, repeatedly at the top of her lungs for the entire world to hear.
"HEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLP!!!!!!!"
From a distance, an anthropomorphic wolf, with a grey mane and ashy white shirt heard her calls. He seemed like any regular wolf.
His ears perked up, twitching in small movements, positioning towards the source of the sound. The deafening blasts of thunder were no help at all. He could feel them shaking his organs underneath his chest, watching the ground's pebbles jump from their places. When he was somewhat sure he caught her location, his face darted forward along with his legs as he ran. Other adults his age ran the opposite direction. Some in small mixed groups of devastated foxes, other wolves, felines and reptilian folk, all sprinting and screaming for their lives. As he continued to run, bypassing the crowds, he briefly glanced at a Fox Mother and her assumed husband passing him by. The Father held his cub wrapped in a blue blanket. They were both completely out of breath, their legs moved faster, regardless. In the heat of his distraction, a panicked bull bumped past his shoulder, almost stumbling his balance. He growled in anger, still running as he looked back. His middle finger went up.
"Watch it, fucker! There's a child in danger!"
His sprints resumed so quickly, it took a few seconds for the bovine to react. The black bull stopped and turned around, his face showing obvious signs of his concern as the tiny ashes blew upwards past his vision. Having only a brief moment to think, he decided to follow, as the Wolf disappeared around the block of a nightmarishly torn apart and smoldering neighborhood. The wolf's hearing was superior to many other species, but the Bull could now hear the yells of the small child, just faintly. The rushing wolf was likely there already, hopefully rescuing the helpless child. Being as oncerned as any other individual would be, the Bull held his hopes high.
Stomping through the ember-filled smoke, he coughed through his quick charge, trying to ignore the blackness creeping into his lungs. He wanted to help, seeing as nobody would feel right leaving a child for dead. He thought he should tag along, help the wolf out, just in case any assistance was needed. Suddenly the little one's voice was clear, as a scream rung out from a house just a block away. In a panic, he spotted the rectangular frame of the home's stoney remains imbedded in the ground, just at the front of a decimated yard. The entire place was gone. As he glanced towards the wolf gal's direction, he saw exactly what made her scream. There, lied the wolf he saw just a couple moments earlier. His body laid sprawled out, pinned down by a burning object. The smoldering stretch of heavy stone laid on top of his back. His expressionless eyes were stuck open, as a thick stream of blood trailed down his mouth, staining the fur of his lower jaw. He was right in front of her, just within her reach. His arms seemed to be pointed in her direction. The girl was even more upset, covering her eyes in fear of the stranger's tragic death. This unusual storm seemed to be getting worse by the minute. Without any warning or build-up of any kind, the ground suddenly began to shake, almost completely toppling the Bull on his side. Their surroundings inexplicably blasted every which way, in strong velocity. The small wolf girl was knocked on her face. Her right eye forcefully struck the sharp part of a loose stone which tilted out of the ground.
A massive fissure opened from a long distance away, creating other cracks to branch with it. The glowing hot material of countless houses fell inside of the colossal opening, leaving a trail of dense smoke in their path. The floor split open, along with the ground all around them. The Bull stretched his arm, reaching out, but only to have his arm forced away by another crashing tremor, strongly spinning his reach the other way around, almost in mid-air. His body rolled out, being cast out and thrown through the burnt yard. His back hit the pavement. Several objects and debris, wooden wheels, and a random antique oven barely missed him by a few inches as they clanked past his currently unconscious head. The five Year old wanted to get up, but was scared out of her wits. Her knees slowly bent up, as she did what she could to keep her balance through the torturous earthquake's rampage. Her clawed toes pattered hard on the ground, shifting in quick movements to keep herself leveled. Her tail stretched out. -An unusual tail for a young wolfess. As it unfurled from behind her, she used the long, slithering furred tail to fall back on, and push herself upright, allowing her to stand on two feet. It was strangely long for her size, and had an enormous amount of strength, but as far as she could tell at the moment, it was insuring her survival.
As she carefully entered through the charred doorframe, her eyes were fixed to the Bull who tried to save her. He laid there, still unconscious, but in grave danger of being hit by the upcoming collateral damage. She hastily picked up her pace, running desperately, forgetting to stabilize her balance. Her head flung back due to the ground's shifting force, almost clunking straight into the stone-carved road. The clanking sounds of iron objects rattling down the road added to the blazing roars of the fire. Her tail worked it's coordination with incredible precision, reactively catching the back of her neck automatically. It slithered and curved, pushing her body up while guarding her head from impact, just inches away from the stone. Eventually through each stumble, she reached his unmoving body. Her paws pushed at his face, revealing his teeth just a little. His head only budged slightly with each heave, and his blue eyes were barely shown through a small slit in his eyelids. As embers showered in all directions, it took forever just so he could look around to take in his surroundings, and acknowledge the orange eyes tearing up and looking back at him, as she tried her hardest to jolt him back to awareness. An inordinately wheezing cough escaped his throat twice, but his eyes refused to open again while his head laid rested back on the rocks.
Crackles and hisses of fire roared in the winds. The distance was covered in an endless raging fiery cloud, spewing more orange lightning along the surface. The light dragged across the roads, flinging up dirt and ashes. Wind swept the heat-waves, creating a burning title-wave of destruction. Ceasing to shove the Bovine awake, her face lifted up. Her orange eyes reflected the abominable scene which displayed itself before her. It was almost as though the Underworld-incarnate had summoned down from the sky to charge in after her direction. Not a word entered through her astonished mind. She was paralyzed in utter fear at the sight of the atrocity. The few forty seconds it took for it to finally come close seemed almost like an hour. The flames flooded in as she meaninglessly braced for inevitable impact. She nudged her head under the Bovine's arms in attempts to hide from the disaster, believing the bull was never going to wake up, and that she was ultimately doomed. Her heart sank into the pit of her Soul, being morbidly reduced into anticipating a terrible demise. In an instant, all hope had left her. Trapped in the feelings of her own despair, she let out a young high-pitched gasp, forfeiting to what would be an early death.
...
In the next moment, an unexpectedly cool brush of air had swept over her, and darkness descended around her. A huge 'thump' vibrated underneath her feet. With tears in her eyes, she pushed herself up. She took another gasp of air, finally being able to breathe without the toxic smoke. Somehow, there wasn't any fire. Instead, there was only a darkness which dulled the sound of the storm, blocking and muffling the dismal aspects of the events that assaulted her senses. A deep and comforting voice spoke from inside, addressing the distressed child. It surprised her.
"Don't move, little one. You will be fine. Me and my allies are here to help your City."
Still traumatized and confused, yet still feeling better than just a few seconds ago, the wolfess cub was mesmerized by the mysterious voice. Her head looked up, speculating where the source of the reassuring voice was coming from. The fire-storm could be heard frustratedly howling through the dense and mysterious material, not standing a single chance against the winged guarding defense of a Dragon. His pitch-black expanse of a scaly body was enormous. His red eyes were not affected by the searing torrents which failed to seep into his self-made tent of protection, keeping both the girl and the Bovine out of harm's way. His long dark tail was tightly wrapped completely around the bottom of his wings, keeping them cuffed away from any fire leaking in from below. The small cub was shaking with nervousness. Her ears drawn down and her tail wrapping hard around the ankle of the only chance of freedom she had. The Dragon selflessly felt her anguish, feeling her trembles travel up his leg. He heard her young cries wrapped within his wings. His worried face showed an expression of empathy.
"Don't worry, this will be over soon child. I promise you.. Just be patient, little one."
The countenance of his voice was soothing and persuasive. His words reached her with a sort of peace. Somehow, she knew everything was going to be fine. In the good clarity of that moment, she took his information to heart. Her strength returned to her, and she sat upright on her knees. One last tear fell to the ground, as her body began to finally de-stress. Her shivers of worry soon dissipated, and her ears lifted back up, almost perky. The billows of fire became less noisy. Gradually, but thankfully, the persistent current of flames had petered out, leaving them alone, but only for now. There wasn't much time until the next disaster would wash over their location again. The Dragon was aware of this pattern, so he spoke loud and clear, ensuring the child would listen.
"Child! Use your arms, legs and tail! Keep yourself wrapped around my leg, so I can fly you both to safety! ...Quickly!"
As another storm was heading close, the Dragon swung his tail underneath the Bull, wrapping quickly around his limp unconscious body. As their rescuer briskly jumped up to take off into the wind, the girl felt herself being pulled downward by the whiplash, forcing a scream to burst out from her cords. She understood now why she was instructed to hold on so desperately. She gazed down, watching her demolished neighborhood shrink from underneath her. What used to be the memory of her peaceful childhood, had suddenly shook violently, as flames consumed every other life and object which remained. She gasped, devastated to see everything and everyone that she knew in her Medieval neighborhood, being engulfed in a fiery Hell of destruction. Looking ahead with her body clinging to the Dragon's foot for dear life, she saw other Dragons diving in one after another. Many were saving others in the same way she was rescued. Knowing many others were likely being guarded from harm, she wanted to feel grateful, and say thank you to her new friend...
But the things she saw... What manner of future events awaited her at this point? And what about her Mother? She didn't even remember as much as what time it was when the disaster struck, and her Mother was nowhere to be seen. There was no way her Mother could've survived that...
With this in mind, tears soaked into her dirt-imbedded face. Her grey droplets blew off her black nose within the hot wind, with her appendages and tail wrapping around the Dragon’s legs even tighter. They were almost submerged from the sea of dark clouds. Deciding to take the safest and least active route through the infernal blasts of red-orange lightning, the Dragon flapped it’s wings more intensively, lifting off higher into the sky. The destruction only followed downwards, towards the City. None of the anomaly was interested in striking them while they soared upwards through the raging blackness. The Wolf pup’s watered eyes rippled her vision, the distortion making it difficult to peer across the skies. The howls of wind and fire were minimized by the distance that set them apart from the destroyed City. Despite the fear she felt, she tried taking as much comfort as she could in the mere fact that she was safe. That was, at least for now. Out there, well-hidden by the seemingly demonic clouds, something out there viciously trembled her awareness. An alarming sensation arose within her heart. Even seeing as the horrific situation had evidently ended, a new and unknown feeling of terror imploded within her chest. Instead of relief, something felt unfathomably dark. As if the embodiment of all evil had called out to her. The sadistic force caused her to turn her head away from the Dragon’s ebony foot, her face no longer buried crying into it. Unaware of what she would end up staring at, a powerful intuition told her eyes where to go. Looking back, she saw a black figure, belittled by distance. It’s body’s shadowy depth made the darkness around it appear almost greyish. The floating creature was far away. However, the searing anxiety which troubled her Soul started to swarm violently within herself. She could see who.. No. -Whatever, IT was, staring directly back at her. It’s red eyes appeared as tiny specs, being as far away as it was. But that didn’t change the paralyzing shivers which crept up her spine. The Dragon felt her fur standing up against his scales.
His steady voice responded in deep frequency.
“Are you okay, little one?”
With her throat stuck, she couldn’t respond. Even if she could, whatever she saw had stopped all thoughts dead in their tracks.
As he soared, his flexible neck let his head turn around to look behind himself. There, in the same distance her eyes were locked, he saw nothing. Save for the night sky gleaming it’s silvery luminescence over the forest of deathly clouds, stretched far around the massive City the girl once called home. Despite having incredible eyesight, there was nothing else he could specify.
“Is... There something you’re seeing, child?”
The figure had pointy canid ears, and the darkest black fur she had ever seen.. If it was fur at all. It’s garments seemed like that of a shadowy robe. For just a split-second, she could have sworn that even from such a far distance, she could see the teeth of that entity baring in her direction, smiling with a deviously provocative intent.
