Some sort of magickal cloaking spell could work, like invisibility. ^_^

Ah yes, missed that part.. okay, what about a device instead then? Maybe either like worn on the wrist.. or maybe an effect from is pendant? Like if he were to turn it around, it would cloak his wings? They'd still be there, just not visible.. hehe, eh thats still a possibility. ^_^;

More graphic but less extension of disbelief removal would be to litrally have them removed, like by an adversary or something

at most, he'd get bruised and rendered unconscious if someone were to try to cut em. Even bullets just cause intense pain and bruises that eventually heal.

You could make them retractable, lol. Have like 2 slits on his back that his wings unfold from. Tbf, artists have trouble with my wings too, so I just tell them to let it clip through the clothing (however improbable that is ).

see, the way i see bat wings, is that you could just use some soft removable magnets on clothes to hold the sleeves together while not flapping loosely.

I've seen some people who when the wings retract leave glowing runes on their back so you know they -were- there.

Did that for Veles's dragon. Still its a maybe.

How feasible might it be for his wings to fold so compactly, that when retracted, they just look like two ridges on his back?

No, I didn't think so. I wanted to stay away from the magic stuff as you mentioned Gabriel isn't capable of that. I think I went with the assumption that the means of hiding his wings had to be more physical. >< Unfortunately I don't have a great suggestion, but thankfully you've got some more imaginative responses here!

Maybe they're retractable? You could have that be a trait of his species.

Oddly enough I thought about Gargoyles but if they're bird wings umm.. Harness would be a problem.. Guessing any sort of transformation of the wings on the body would be taken as magical instead of just a natural feature.. Honestly a feature from that pendant sounds like a good idea or the runes on his back that were pitched by  izaak and  renlu respectively.

Hmmm. In some stories I've read, the dragon is able to shrink the wings down before having them absorbed into their body to do things like fit into tight spaces, ect, ect. Then, when he/she/ wishes to go fly, they simply regrow them back into place.

Apparently it's seamless. Just my two cents ^_^

that seems like magic is in play , but yes, i've read of such before as well.
