A brief guide to Demi-Legendaries
Anyone who is, has, or will ever come in contact with this account needs to know about my fanfic Child of Legends, and the “demi-legendaries” present in said fanfic. However, I know that not all of you are patient enough to read the whole thing, so I’ll give you a quick rundown on what demi-legendaries are.
The Basics
Essentially, demi-legendaries are the children of humans and legendary Pokémon. I headcanon that all legendary Pokémon can transform into humans whenever they want, and therefore they can reproduce with normal humans only when in their human form. Demi-legendaries usually have the same or similar skin pigmentation as their legendary parent (typically with a hair color to match) and other features relating to their legendary parent (such as wings or a tail), but have a human-like body shape and form. Additionally, while children of more human-sized legendaries (such as Articuno and Regirock) are roughly the same size as normal humans, children of smaller legendaries (such as Mew and Manaphy) tend to be shorter than normal humans, while children of larger legendaries (such as Lugia and Groudon) tend to be taller. They also are known to have untapped power, and typically have somewhat scaled-down versions of their legendary parents’ powers. Demi-legendary traits tend to go away after 3 generations, but the strongest demi-legendaries (as well as the most unpredictable) are first-generation ones, due to most of them not knowing anyone who could teach them how to control their powers. To remedy this solution, Camp Arceus was founded on an island off the coast of Johto as a place where demi-legendaries could meet up with other demi-legendaries and learn to harness their powers.
Exceptions
There are five legendary Pokémon that are unable to transform into humans, those being Mewtwo, Genesect, Magearna, Type:Null, and Silvally. Since all five of them were created by humans, no demi-legendaries have been born to them, though there are instances of half-Mewtwo children being children of Mew. Additionally, Phione, Cosmog, and Cosmoem can transform into humans, but they take the appearance of a child (or a teenager in Cosmoem’s case) so since no sane person would want to reproduce with a child, no children of any of them have been known. However, there have been cases of half-Phione children being children of Manaphy, and children of Solgaleo and Lunala start off as half-Cosmog, then evolve to become half-Cosmoem at around age 10, then reach their final form in their late teens. Finally, we have Arceus. Arceus has produced several demi-legendary children in the past, but due to having created most of the other gods, he has exhausted himself to the point where he cannot reproduce, and takes the form of an old man in his human form.
Receiving their Pokémon Form
Demi-legendaries are forbidden from seeing their legendary parent until said demi-legendary receives their Pokémon form. Typically, this means their human parents will have to raise the child themselves, due to legendaries being busy with… you know, being legendaries. However, after some sort of heroic or challenging deed, Arceus deems them worthy of their Pokémon form, and shoots an arrow of pure power through their heart, triggering the transformation process. The demi-legendary will then transform into their Pokémon form. This is a gradual process, and while it can be painful, the pain is never excruciating and usually mild. Demi-legendaries usually report extreme amounts of power filling their body when they receive their Pokémon form. After receiving their Pokémon form, demi-legendaries usually visit their legendary parents. Demi-legendaries in their Pokémon form cannot be caught using Pokéballs, due to them being half-human in their natural form.
Demi-Beasts
Ultra Beasts have also been reported to transform into humans, despite not being legendaries, and often live among humans, marrying pure-blooded humans and having half-beast children known as demi-beasts. The only one that cannot reproduce is Poipole, who, like Phione and Cosmog, takes the form of a young child. However, children of Naganadel start out as half-Poipole and evolve into Naganadel in their late teens or upon reaching adulthood. Unlike legendaries, Ultra Beasts will typically live with their family after siring or giving birth to demi-beasts, since they are plentiful in their home dimension and are not gods of anything in particular. Like demi-legendaries, demi-beasts have the same skin tone as their Ultra Beast parent and will have the powers that said Ultra Beast has. They also tend to have features of their Ultra Beast parents, such as children of Buzzwole having insectoid wings and antennae, children of Pheromosa having antennae, children of Guzzlord having a second mouth on their belly, children of Stakataka having extra eyes in certain places, and children of Blacephalon having detachable heads. Demi-beasts are also forbidden from seeing their Ultra Beast parent in their Pokémon form if they are in their human form, so Ultra Beasts will stay in their human form unless their demi-beast child is not present. To receive their Pokémon form, demi-beasts must do something unusual. Instead of Arceus, Necrozma administers the receiving of their Pokémon form, and does so via beams of light as opposed to arrows of pure power. Instead of Camp Arceus, demi-beasts are sent to Camp Ultra, a summer camp off the coast of Ula’ula Island that serves as a safe haven for demi-beasts as well as a long-time rival of Camp Arceus.
