Personally, I love an equal balance between the two. Having a greater depth of plot and character development between those who are sexually involved makes it more intense and gratifying to me. But of course, there’s nothing inherently wrong some gratuitous sex without much story, either.

well it depends the mood, but i prefer balance, i like when the story advances and develops the characters. if the chars are lovable, the sex act will be better

I like them to have somo sort of flux motion balance.
Like some background, then sex, then more development, sex again, and repeat

Well, it is a story and not just porn.
The Classic:
"Why do you have hay in your basement?"
"Why do you wear a mask as a mechanic?"
"Don't mind, lets f*cking"

i like it best when sex is built into the story. It doesn't have to be love. It can also be fear. But you only sympathize with characters whose behavior you can follow.

The question is not what, who or when.
Only: Why?

And if you can answer that as an author. That the reader understands the answer, can relate to it, then you have a story. And then it doesn't matter whether it consists of 10%, 50% or 80% sex.

The relationship between story and sex is like the relationship between a bar and booze. Without the social aspect and the ambiance, you're just a guy drinking from a paper bag; but without the booze, a bar isn't a bar, no matter what the patrons say.

The sex is greatly improved by the story, and the story should serve that purpose. But your readers are not here for near-beer.
