fur-phobia?
Ok so today in art class we were doing a "hat trick" assignment where had to put 3 options into the hat people could pick, and then after everyone put their 3 things in, the hat gets passed around for people to draw 3 things from the hat and draw whatever we draw (using all 3 in the same picture), You put it back into the hat so another person has the potential to draw it again, also if you don't like what you picked you can ask the teacher to come up with 3 randomly for you
As usual I put in "furries" and "cats", but since we had to do 3 this time I also put in "Nintendo games", but I REALLY wanted people to draw furries, cause it thought it would be fun to see what people come up with, 2 people drew "furries" as one of their options and both people were visibly appalled and asked the teacher to pick a random 3 for them (And they were the only ones to ask the teacher to do so)
In all 3 of my semesters in art class, only one other person who drew "furries", and he was also very upset about the fact, however he also drew "blood and gore" and decided to keep it just so he could draw a furry getting their head smashed in
I just feel unwelcome now more so than usual, considering I felt unwelcome just from being there with the fact that I'm not that good at art, I mean, I've read about discrimination against furries but not actually experienced it, It's just fucking dumb, I get there's a stigma thinking that they're overly sexual, sure, but they're literally just goddamn animal people, cartoon characters, it doesn't have to be anything sexual, and if you're the one drawing it you get to choose what they're doing soooo...?
I just don't get it

I've never heard of/experience that art class exercise.
Maybe if you wrote "Cartoon animals"?
yea, I probably could have phrased it differently, like "animal people" or something, I just didn't think it would matter
I'm guessing you're not out/open about your furry-ness, am I right?
I'd say most people have drawn some kind of furry without thinking about it.
The famous art test has you draw like a turtle or a cartoon bear, stuff like that...
but I'm pretty open about it where I am.
Just had the most amazing experience attending my first furry convention a week and a half ago.
I would love to attend a con someday though, it sounds like it would be fun, if I could afford to go to one I might consider it, though I just hope my anxiety can handle being around that many people, not to mention being around people in full-body costumes always makes me nervous for some reason
It also took me a bit to be able to approach a fursuiter to get a picture or a hug from them, let alone express how much I loved their look.
Plus I totally understand about not telling your folks about half the stuff you're secretly into...
And yeah, I can see how being in the "bible belt" would make things harder... I'd guess the closest place for you to go to a furry convention would either be in Reno or in Texas.
The convention I just attended was just a train and a subway ride away from home. So it was quite easy to get there.
and yea, I'm sure I would have a good time, I'd just have to get used to it, I just know I don't do well with crowds
So I thought, okay, either south to whatever con is in Texas or west to Biggest Little Fur Con/BLFC which is where I'm pretty certain is in Reno NV.
I honestly don't know if there's a convention closer. I was extremely lucky to have found out about ANE in general, but also that it moved from elsewhere in the state to someplace I could get to on my own, Boston, which is just a train ride away from home.
Before that, I'd have thought it'd be a LOT longer before I could manage to get to a furry convention.
I will say that I went to PAX East (Penny Arcade eXpo) a few years ago and was pretty overwhelmed. It was Not held in a hotel like ANE, but in a big open convention hall.
That thing was MAJORLY crowded. I didn't manage to do much of anything there. I was lucky that I wasn't there alone.
But ANE was not too crowded at all. Other than maybe a couple of the panels and occasionally the elevators, I never had any trouble with crowds.
I know about PAX East, I think it would be cool to go to that too, but maybe not if it's that crowded
And there are a bunch of PAX's, possibly a PAX South? or something...
There was just so much there and I was pretty overwhelmed. I also didn't know what was going to be there beforehand like I did with this furry con and came with a gameplan. Also I was was only at PAX East for the one day, whereas I went to every possible day of ANE.
I hope you get to go to Some convention someday, it's quite the experience. Just be prepared to want to spend lots of money, so if you don't have much you'll end up stuck where you can't decide what to spend what little you have on... (I literally bought MLP comics at the gaming convention... that was all I ended up buying)
Where as at the furry convention I brought home furry comics and buttons and ordered a commission that's due to arrive soon. ^_^
(not to mention that I won a few things in one of the panel games)
travel was cheap for me, but since I didn't get a hotel room that made up for it I suppose.
And I had about $300 that I had planned on spending, but only ended up spending about half that.
But, I do want to have plenty more than that for next year, am thinking of getting a room and I definitely want to be able to buy more things.
(be great if I could either Have or Get a fursuit head as well, but I'm not going to be terribly upset if I don't)
Also, not having spent so much of my 2nd job's paycheck on stuff from the store (thinking that they would keep me on after the holidays...) I'd have had much more...
Also, while I do have discount pass for the train, I did still ride it back and forth over several days (as well as the subway to get from the train station to the hotel where the convention was being held.)
Just save up as best you can when you figure out when and where you wanna go.
I wish you the best of luck.
