Welp my 5 year old tablet has just about kicked the bucket. I'm thinking about going halfsies with my family so I can order a Cintiq 12WX http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/cintiq-12wx.php in September for my birthday. Does anyone own one? Is it really worth the money? I've always had alot of trouble looking at a screen and directing my hand movements without looking; so I mainly just used my old tablet to color. I think a screen based tablet might solve this problem for me and I could finally produce digital art. Any negative or positive feedback is welcomed.
I start my new career in just three days! Exciting and scary!! :)

bloodyasses i am so lazy
My experience with the Cintiq 12WX has been nothing but disappointment. I used the ones at my school so maybe they've just be insanely used, but I found them to be more annoying than helpful. There's no incredible difference in pressure sensitivity (at least I don't remember there being any) and the screen not big enough to make a huge impact. Also, the colors on the cintiq's screen were different than the ones on the computer so that fucks up coloring and painting. Though the colors can be fixed, I say save up a little more for the 21UX. For a cheaper new tablet, I just bought a wacom intous4 and I LOVE IT. I know you want to try out a screen tablet, but the intous4 (medium) is really really nice if you're coming from an older tablet. I just replaced my old intous2 that I've had since highschool.
I also want to say you should try using a cintiq first if you can. I've found that I prefer using an intous and like to look at the computer screen, but I've also never tried the cintiq 21UX so my advice is pretty bias and I apologize for that.
Good luck!
I absolutely know I dont want an intous tablet though ... I just dont have the coordination for them lol! I have never enjoyed drawing with the tablet I have now.
I'm not sure anyone locally sells cintiq tablets so I dont know if I can test one out. I will try hard to track one down though. Thanks so much for the info ... it's going to take alot of thinking for me to comitt to buying one! haha
I prefer looking at the screen too though, I got the Intuos4 too <3
There's no major difference in pressure sensitivity, there is often a difference between monitor and tablet screen colors, which has a big effect on your work, and the cost is a pretty hefty one.
In short, You pay a lot of extra just to be able to look down at your hands while drawing... :/
Don't know what's with people and the pressure sensitivity, I've had no trouble with it, but then I'm quite a light touch so I know when I'm pressing.
Cons:
- There is a distance between the pen and screen of about 4mm, so you should still follow the pointer for fine work.
- Colour is funny (I actually like it, tho I use dual screens to check anyway)
- As a monitor, it's not very good and quite pixelated.
- if you like to get close for detail, you get a face full of pixels.
- Pricey as fuck.
- Not paper.
Personally, I learned on an A3 size Wacom Digitizer II and the move to a 21UX was excessive. Neither me or my friend use our cintiqs enough to warrant its purchase and we both regret it. However neither of us will give them up for anything, and heck, when I need the goods, it delivers.
Personally I went for the big 21ux since you want to keep arm length from the work and I don't particularly enjoy drawing in a letterbox.
If you draw a lot on computer already, you'll love it. If you don't draw on computer much for whatever reason - it won't make you.
Hope that helps, if you've got any specific questions: shoot :)
