This is also a post I made to my patreon that I felt was rather relevant to copy+paste here. If you're interested in reading it on my patreon, however, you can check it out now by clicking here c:
Hello Star Creatures~ Long time, no see! haha
I have been thinking over this past month about fursuits, and how much fun it would be to create one. I will openly admit that the primary experience I have with fursuit making really just boils down to the creation of yarntails (which basically means zero experience at all), but I am really thinking of giving it a go. I'm already fiddling with different methods of yarn ears, as well as planning different methods for hand and feetpaws to match with my yarntails. As I've played around with these ideas, it really just made me think "why not go all the way and create full-fledged fursuits and/or costumes?"
I don't know how soon I'll be able to actually put this idea into motion, as I'm pretty flippin' broke and live in a small apartment that doesn't exactly give me much room to work in, but I'm certainly going to try and accomplish something over time, slowly but surely sharing as I do so. In other words, the creation of fursuits is a long term goal of mine that I want to work up to. Ideally, if I end up getting the hang of it, I'd love to sell suits in the future, not just tails as I am now. I think it'd be really fun, but I can't get too ahead of myself here! lolz
So how do I plan to work up to this goal?
For now, I intend to start with ears as I continue to crank out yarntails, making matching sets to sell on my etsy shop. I will also begin to work with faux fur fabric and perfecting my style for sewn tails and ears as well, (since I strongly doubt that creating full suits out of yarn is a realistic plan haha!) and hope to open up customs for yarn tails very soon, which will help me raise the funds I need to move forward with the next steps in my processes, starting with faux fur tails and ears and continuing into the following.
I'm also going to test out some plans behind the scenes for footpaw ideas, handpaw ideas, and other small bits and pieces of fursuits, such as eyes, noses, paw-pads, etc. All of these ideas I will share through posts here on my patreon for patrons only if that sort of trial period interests anyone. It could go poorly, it could go exceptionally well, we'll just have to see! However it goes, until I am confident in the final product and plan to replicate and perfect it, I won't be posting the results of these trials publicly.
Depending on how quickly I get into the swing of it, as early as the beginning of 2019, and as late as around this time of year 2019, I'd like to start attempting to create my first fursuit head. For the rest of the year, I'll continue to practice creating heads, paws, and tails until I'm confident enough to accept commissions for custom partials (which fingers crossed I can feel confident enough to do by the latest of 2020).
Selling partials will help me raise the funds I need to start practicing arms, legs, and bodies, and hopefully, ideally, I can officially start selling full-fledged fursuits sometime in 2020! :D
I will keep posting updates about this plan and more specifics regarding it as time goes on, but this is my overall goal. Thank you kindly for the time, and have a wonderful rest of your day Star Creatures~
SIDE-NOTE: If anyone has any tips for a newbie fursuit/costume maker, I would absolutely love and appreciate them, please and thank you in advance to anyone and everyone who does. To understand what I have to work with: I have a basic knowledge of sewing, and a beginner's/cheap sewing machine (New Home Janome) that I highly doubt will have the power necessary to sew through thick faux fur, but I'm willing to hand-sew if my machine can't do the job until I can afford a newer, better one. I also own a partial by
WolfBird that my friend
SongDog sold me quite some time ago that I can use as a sort of reference for basic structural needs, like understanding the structure of the foam head and placement of eyes, etc. I unfortunately don't have an airbrush, so any fur patterns I create will have to be made with the fabric itself until I can manage to afford otherwise, but my priority would be a new machine over an airbrush so it'll surely be quite some time before I have this luxury. Please advise if you think I should be flipping my priorities and why.
