Generation Categorization is Weird

Sooo, I am apparently part of Generation Z according to some, while to others, I am a Millennial. I was born in 1996. >w>;
Also, Millennial/Generation Y is 1981 - 1995 (or 1996, I don't fucking know) when it should be 2000 - 2009, shouldn't it? Millennial is from the term "Millennium" which, by definition, is a period of a thousand years.
It's just weird.. and a bit confusing, I guess. lol
