I don't follow the user anymore but they always wrote "Small free public version" at the start of the title of each of their submissions, and even put the patreon logo as censorship over the actual nudity stuff in some cases.
Its sad, because I don't mind patreon, its a good platform that helps alot of people but its ones that do crap like this that gives the site and people using it a bad rep.

I have nothing against Patreon, the problem isn't really the advertising itself. The main problem is that some artists are uploading ads with wrong tags and classification. The artist uploads a safe-for-work image, but it's marked as Adult with adult tags, because if we want to see the real image then we have to pay.
I think it's probably against the rules, I don't know, because here it's more than a simple annoying ad, it's like a clickbait with improper classification and tags.

Well hey, at least we can be thankful that they aren't pulling some real BS like having the thumbnail be the adult version but when you click its the SFW version.

Actually, it'd fall under false advertising, not marketing. Look up how US law treats false advertising and deceptive practices and you'll see why people are getting upset.
People don't care about the advertising, they don't mind the promoting their patreon, the issue is using false tags and ratings to bolster views to that ad.

Tricksta isn't even the best example though, there are way worse offenders out there.

They've complained in journals on both FA and IB of their Patrons being greedy and only doing the $1 pledge for art when that's the minimum to get in.
They've complained about not enough money but doesn't respond to commission requests
They want donations to continue coloring stuff, but refuse to say how much needs to be donated per page or put up a counter for it

Yes, that is really annoying. The censored versions of NSFW pics, too. Patreon was planned as a tip jar, not a paywall. I'm okay with more versions on Patreon or high resolution, but I want at least one NSFW version free. Especially when artists have commissions since there are ssome NSFW artists which have all their content behind Patreon, so I don't know if they draw the things I want and if yes, if they draw it in a way I like.

I understand that commissions are a hard way to get enough money and Patreon is a lot easier, but I think it's too easy. If an artist wants to draw only what (s)he wants, he has to do a little more than just building up a paywall, like delivering art books or comics and especially drawing a little more than just the normal furry stuff... But this is just my opinion.

Hey, I agree with that! I hate the fact that Patreon has become a thing people shove into their descriptions and have big bold paragraphs saying how you can support them by paying money just to see their art. I mean, money from the people that commission them should be enough.. right? If not they could raise their prices. And then there are the ones who make it so Patreons get their art a whole month or two early! It's giving you a reason to pay for a subscription. I guess it's a good thing it's only $5 a month and not $20. But the example you posted is definitely wrong.

While I don't support patreons like Tricksta/Blitzdrachin have setup, commissions rarely cover cost of living and Patreon is a valid way to make it so.

To give you an idea, for me to live in/near a local city it would be roughly(per month):
$1k rent
$90 internet
$50 phone
$200 food
$100 car insurance
$450 car itself
$1890/month total

That's for a basic single person apartment, no luxuries. The common price for commissions currently seems to be $60 or 32 of those per month to cover costs.

Patreon however can be done as a great supplement or main part of income without really putting non-patrons at a disadvantage. The delay of posting art, HD packs, raffles for free shit etc. Even if you don't pay you still have pretty much the same perks as those who do but it gives the artist more freedom. No one should be told "I want porn so you should barely be able to scrape by".

That is however not to say you should support people who you don't agree with. That's precisely why I'm no longer a patron of Tricksta simply due to how he runs it and acts so indignant towards his patrons and fans.

Raising commission rates also doesn't go over well in general with furries with a bunch claiming its unfair because they don't have the money to outbid those with more, or because the person opens at non-local times

Hrrm, alright. Though I've seen some insane YCH's from artists which have gotten into the $300-600 price range for a single piece of artwork. I suppose its a great thing for those who use it properly, but some people abuse having a Patreon.

I'm one of the people who usually go for the $200+ and easily into the $500+ range. For those artists I work with they obviously put more time into it. Turn around on that is typically 1 week or more. If you're not a popufur then auction YCH's for the mid-high amounts is a lot more risky than lower quality but more quantity artists. At the high amounts you're expected to always put out a specific quality level regardless if it ends at $300 or $800.

Anyways, the point I'm trying to make is even though you may see high bids it's not worth a whole lot unless you can reliably pull in a minimum bid and put out a minimum # of YCHs per month. Otherwise the $400+ artists may end up making less than the $60 artists.

Edit: Another issue with high bids is the other people. I've had people bitch at me for bidding so high. Artists have had people bitch at them for not offering flat low $ (the $60 range I mentioned) rather than auction. Furries generally hate people who spend more than minimum wage and artists who can make potentially hundreds off a single art piece. It's really not pleasant.

I remember when one artist did send me a Patreon link to show me the commission that he finished for me, but i couldn't see it since i weren't supporting him on Patreon.

It's disappointing to see some artists showing a lack of respect for their watchers by aggressively marketing their works. It's bad enough that there's plenty of overpriced YCH auctions/growth drives designed to make people pay more for art than what its really worth. Integrity is lost among some of these creatively talented people.

This tactic has caused me to check FA less and less. Since I am not a big commissioner I generally just appreciate the things that other people get, but now many artists post teasers that lead to advertising for their pateon. I understand its an easy way to crowd fund to a large number of people and to include those who pay you, those of us who are merely bystanders of what other people bought are now locked out all together, sometimes even locked out of those pieces that someone payed for. (receiving double payment for a piece is something completely different to rant about). So that brings me to the main issue that these paywalls cause, a lack of community for those of us who are not shelling out money, as well as building cliques around artists since one cannot support everyone they may enjoy art of, this means less clicking on art, less following the rabbit hole down to a character in that art and finding a budding artist and following them
