sevlowtyak Hello, its me, your self appointed critic, back after a long hiatus and here with another review for you! The movie's name is "District 9". It is a science fiction epic from writer/producer/director Neill Blomkamp (The guy that would have done "Halo")
The storyline is as follows: Twenty years ago, in 1990, an alien spacecraft was spotted on planet Earth. To everyone's surprise, it stopped and floated above Johannesburg, crashed, stranded, and not moving. Several weeks passed before the humans decided to go inside the spacecraft. Inside they find more than a million vaguely humanoid aliens in horrible physical and environmental conditions. The aliens are taken outside their spaceship and kept in slum-like areas all residing in District 9 where they remained for twenty years.
OK, that's enough about the storyline. One thing I went into this movie expecting was a lot about the aliens. This I got, though it wasn't all that there was to the movie. The characters are shockingly believable, with no recognizable faces anywhere. The storyline is one that is multi-layered, unique, deep, involving, and brilliant. And, what surprised me most of all was how much information and detail they put into the movie. There is a fully realized and invented world depicted in the movie, one absolutely convincing in its magnitude and scale. Another thing that stands out was the aliens themselves: They are amazingly rendered and look like something you could reach out and touch. For those who don't like stories without there being humor and action, there were both here. There was even a bit of romance but not too much where you're disappointed that it all turned out to be a sappy romance. Pacing is consistent, characters were well thought out, brilliantly acted, and all the characters have tons of growth, and the storyline is deep and compelling while being very entertaining as well. There are too many things for me to say about how well made this movie was without me giving spoilers. It is a nice break from thin but very fun movies like "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "G. I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" from earlier this summer. For all these reasons, "District 9" gets a 10 out of 10.
On a final note, if you find my score to be inaccurate or simply do not agree with me, then please speak up! I enjoy discussing and defending my positions.
Your self appointed critic.

Its not really horror. Its more of a character drama/action movie. Though it does have many scenes of graphic violence.
