Ugh... Windows Updates...

Amiright? You'd think after 8 years they'd roll them up into a couple of nice and tidy service packs instead of the 1200+ updates that they currently are *grumbles*
Like the current skype, its absolute garbage. Terrible interface, not simple to use at all. And I can't say no to updates anymore.
I paid for an 8.1 machine, I'm sticking with it until I get a new PC.
I honestly wouldn't even be using this comp right now if my made-in-2014, Windows 8.1, good-as-you-can-get-for-a-consumer-grade-prebuilt-comp hadn't DIED ON ME LAST WEEK!! >:C I don't even know what the issue is/was (sudden death, basically), but it pisses me off to no end. I BABIED that thing inside and out; I swear, I picked up and moved that thing more tenderly than some people hold their KIDS. >:C And what dust?
They SAY the average age for an HDD is four/five years, but I'll thank you to know our first comp (Compaq Presario, 1995, Win 98) lasted 14 YEARS. In a household with TWO SMOKERS. This one, also an HDD, was built in 2005. Was in less than ideal conditions for an indeterminable amount of time, been through two moves and possibly bonked around a bit, sat in my closet four years... This old beast's a TANK. Heavy like one, too, but that's fine by me. :) Only thing wrong is the system clock battery's dead, but I'm not concerned; doesn't impede its function.
And you wanna try to tell me an HDD only lasts four/five years? Yeah, so... I'm kinda pissed. Pardon my ramble, but in a roundabout way, I know your frustration. Try finding programs compatible for a no-longer-supported system... Oof.
I know they're saying SSD's average life span is about 5 years and I'm pretty close to that, but I honestly have noticed a change in performance since I got it, only Windows slowing down a bit 'cause it's been so long since I did a format. I'm thinking of dropping the funds on a new one anyway, I can spend the same amount of money and get double the space now, plus Samsung gives you migration software to mirror one drive to another, so it'll be like nothing changed. Then keep the current SSD for a backup in case something happens with the new one :D
From what I've read, I'm not all that sure it's the HD itself that went out; I mean, it DID have 99 allocation/reallocation/pending errors according to CrystalDisk (on a 2 TERABYTE DRIVE), but this one? I got CrystalDisk again out of curiosity, and this one has a whopping 200 errors/pending count ON 80 GIGS. ?!?!?! O_O And it's been alive for 13 YEARS?? I... *Flails in confusion* ?!? It doesn't even act sick, it's just on the slow side (age, but still!)! D: Makes me all the more aggravated. RRRRGH!
Surprising about the SSD, though; I thought those were supposed to far surpass HDD's in lifespan since they had no moving parts? Guess I'm probably just out of the loop on that one, though; I've never had any first-hand experience with an SSD that wasn't a phone or tablet. There's also the fact of what they're used for... *Cue le shrugs*
I can't say for certain, on that; I know the one we had before it (that we ended up giving away) was a refurb... And I did a little digging out of curiosity; this hard drive's a Western Digital. Don't know what that means in terms of longevity, but I heard SeaGate (the one in my now-ded comp) is supposed to be pretty low on the bar. :/
