And even if it's not animated, can I still recommend Ultraman Mebius? It's full of heart, and makes you nostalgic for shows you haven't even seen. Also perfectly approachable for a first time watcher despite being a 40th anniversary series.
As for my favorite... I'd have to say Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood would win out since its one I rewatch every year and a bit.

As for my favorite anime too... mine's Guts from Berserk. Because he's a badass protagonist.~
Tough question! I think I'd probably have to go with one of the FMA series... Been a while since I've really watched much of anything though. :V
I personally really liked Kuroko's Basketball even though I don't like sports at all. :D I also enjoyed Avatar, but some people argue that that one is not an anime, so dunno. Also a big plus to the first comment, Temeraire is also my favorite book series.

There are a good pool of cartoons and such i have enjoyed either in my past or current day, hard choice but my recent tastes considered, I'd say Rick and Morty goes to top my fav cartoons list.
.Hack its an older game series, manga and anime. I find it rather in depth for being as old as it is.
My standard answer to this question is always Full Metal Alchemist (both the manga and the Brotherhood anime are great), so I thought I'd mention Birdmen, a manga I got into recently and I think needs some more love.

I can't think of my all time favorite, but one of the most recent shows I've watched that I really liked was Aggretsuko. Can't wait for the second season!
Currently my favorite anime is Overlord, I found interesting the narrative placed in the anime and the environment itself, fleeing from the much-used history of good versus evil, at least so far.
And I need to mention Fairy Tail too, I can say that it ties with Overlord, for me.

And as for the question... hmm... well I've always been a real serious fan of sci-fi anime. Specially ones with mecha. So I suppose I'll go with any one of the GitS animes. But Patlabor and Appleseed are another set close fav given how they used mechs in that show.
