Well, since I see a bunch of artist that do take this route (Such as  Yowesephth and  brutananana), I'd say go for it o:

Hm, I'd say trying out a mix of both could be interested. You could switch it up between trying out designing anthropomorphic characters, and at other moments you could just follow the original designs with additions of feet o:.

With what I've seen, you can't go wrong either way. Just do what you feel like doing :p. ( But if you really wanted to get an actual precise answer from me, maybe just adding feet could do :u )
