RIP Fred Patten
I'm not happy to be the one to announce this, but I was asked to by Fred's sister.
Fred Patten passed away today shortly after 8 AM. He was found unresponsive the morning of November 1st, and never regained consciousness.
Fred was one of the first people I met in in furry fandom, back in the mid 1980's. He was a long time editor and member of Rowrbrazzle, and shared my love of furry fiction. He helped me get my first professional comics story published with Antarctic Press, and was a tireless and enthusiastic fan of my artwork and writing.
After his stroke over 10 years ago, he helped me by doing copy editing on my writing, and recommending me to do covers and illustrations for the various anthologies he edited. I cannot over emphasize the effect his encouragement and backing had in helping me become the writer and artist I am today. I dedicated the second Griffin Ranger book to him, and he deserved thanks, along with a couple other people, for getting me writing again after years of only doing comics.
As of now I don't have information on where to send official condolences; I will try to post that when I get it. I was told there will be no service.
Goodbye Fred. I will miss you, my life is so much better for having known you, and I hope now you have all the good books to read you could ever ask for.

Thank you for letting us know Roz, I've been worrying about him since he'd had pneumonia late last month, and I hadn't heard back from him...
He could have spent fewer paragraphs comparing it to "Kismet" but I appreciate the publicity still.
Rest in peace, Fred.

Today sucks.
He will be remembered.
This is shattering. Fred welcomed me when I first met U.S. Fandom back in the 80's. He was the last person I saw in america on my last trip decades ago as we waved goodby at the airport. We stayed in touch constantly. He was a deight, a solid friend and a pillar of fandom.
Love you Fred. you will be terribly missed. My life was made better by your being here.
It would be no exaggeration to say he almost single handedly introduced the USA to Anime and Manga!
He was a friend and he will absolutely be missed!
Bakertoons: I can see the comic doing well with old-school furries, so it might do wonders to try to market to them. I think sending a copy to Dogpatch Press might be a good start. Fred Patten reviews them. https://dogpatch.press/
Gonechoo: Fred Patten would love it. Fred's very old school funny animals. I wasn't aware he was STILL with us!
Bakertoons: Yeah, Fred's still around
Gonechoo: Fred is a name I remember from 80's era anthropomorphic comics. Ha ha, I'd forgotten he's like the father of the American Anime Fandom. He was one of the greater proponents that eventually lead to it getting lasting traction in American culture back in the early 80s.Thanks for the tips - the Fred Patten one is a solid lead.
This sad news today that drives home the fragility of the precious opportunities life gives us.
I'd like to return to the normal zero, please. To whom may be the authority on all things life and death related.
Anyway, thank you for all your hard work Fred Patten. Rest easy and enjoy your eternal bless in God's kingdom. Your be gone, but certainly not forgotten.
I am old enough to remember meeting him a few times and finding out who this guy was, and I was truly impressed when I did my digging and saw all he had done for Fantasy, Sci Fi, and Furry and so on...
The list of stuff this man did for all fandoms is staggering!

Fred Patten and Stan Lee: both major figures in their respective fields, both passing in the same 24 hours.
R.I.P.
Who will pick up the torch now?
At least, I had the rare opportunities of meeting both individuals during my life. I'd met Mr. Lee at several NYC editions of the Creation (comic/sci-fi/fantasy) Convention during the '70s and '80s. Fred and I had encountered one another at a 2001 edition of "Anthrocon" in Philadelphia. You can see a photo of Fred and I at http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3799066/
Both of them were legends, and both of them will be missed...
Rest in peace, Fred. Thank you for all that you did.
When someone's been around "forever," you kind of hope/assume they will continue to be around forever--and among us he will be, in our hearts and memories.
Our fursonas may stay forever young if we wish it, but the sad reality is that we do not...
What can I add but...... wherever he is now, I hope he is no longer sick, but strong and young.
THats all I can say :/
