It really depends the artist and their cue! I would say 2-4 weeks is the sweetspot if properly managed :3
And if it takes longer, at least keep the person informed ^w^ Trello has definitely been a good thing for artists because they way they can see the progress and the cue :3
I'm also given WIPs throughout the commission process, which makes it feel like you're getting your art is a lot quicker
BUT I normally wait a few weeks honestly, if it gets over a month I'll get kinda impatient and worried. If it ever exceeds that, unless it's a really big piece I'll probably give a hey what's up message asking for an update. But I always try to be as understanding as possible, Lord knows how hard artists work.
6 weeks is the most I'm willing to wait nowadays (unless I've bought something very time consuming like an animation commission), and I have to repeatedly ask the artist about their turnaround times before I buy from them because I've been burned a lot on commission times.
So I'd say on average. 1 month to 1 month in a half.
Like is mentioned above, communication communication communication. I don't mind waiting if an artist makes the effort to at least show they care. Even if it's "Hey, no progress yet but you're still in the queue and on my list!", I prefer that far more than never hearing from someone for months and wondering if I'll ever get art or if I got scammed. Keeping an updated trello or something commissioners can view an active work list is really nice to see.
Basically, two weeks to two months or so is about the limit I can go without communication before I start wondering if something's wrong. I've also had artists take on new work AND finish newer work before my commission was done. As a commissioner, it's an absolutely horrible feeling, especially if no explanation is offered.
I've bought a couple that were ready in a few days.
I definitely like having my stuff fast because I get super excited, but if the artist can at least give me an estimated date of completion, I'm willing to wait a month or so.
