Fur "Tattoos", methods, ideas, and 'wuuut's?

Keep Your Promises, Especially To Yourself.
Alot of folks have their furs bearing tattoos or other markings.
My horse character/god has them himself, with some bonus deity ridiculousness.
In some, it makes entire sense, in others, I have to wonder.
Tats on at thick furred critter for example.
Now this isn't a 'Hurr durr ya can't character the way you want cause I know best' Journals. If your whooly sheepdog has a cool tat on his arm and it shows through his fur? I'm fine with that. by all means, the horse is gonna probably compliment on it.
I'm looking at a question, if you were gonna mark these folks, would yall think of
Tats first, Dye's first, some kinda permanent magic/scifi/semi-realistic fur pigment alternation, or branding?
So far I've sorta held that Totus himself has a colored branding around his arm and just calls it a 'tattoo' since it had dyes put into it. But this train of thought got me wondering, how do other folks do it?

If it's coloured then could be any number of methods, depends on the character. My personal favourite is manipulating melanin levels through sorcery/ science
Though it does make me wonder how tattoos would work on characters with carapaces :o
