In addition, most pets acquired by shelters, pounds, and adoption centers tend to be scared of humans. Most of the ones that are scared were also abused before or after they left their original owners.
You need for these animals to warm up to you over time. At worst, they will never warm up to you. If this happens, go find another pet. There will always be a pet that will open up to you and welcome you.
But, in case you have problems, you can always adopt a pet that has a hard time trusting you and loving them anyway. This is called being a good person.
Most animals are put down (euthanized) if they don't get owners after a long time. This is done by shelters that ARE NOT kill shelters. Kill shelters kill the animals after a few months, which is a short time. The more humane and morally acceptable shelters are required to kill the animals after a few years. All shelters kill their animals sadly.
A good person adopts an animal as long as they can care for it, and they have no other pet. Even if the pet is scared of them, the pet will live a happier, healthier life than if they are trapped in a cage their entire life being fed once or twice a day.
Remember to love all animals. These creatures endure horrible things before they find kind owners. I'm sure you are a kind owner if you are looking to adopt, and not go to a breeder or kennel. Mind you, its not bad to go to those places, because both breeders and kennels euthanize their extra animals they can't sell, and they often abuse their animals before they are ever sold. Their animals often leave very short lives, because of selective breeding, a form of popular inbreeding in which animals are bred with their parents or siblings to produce the so claimed 'best' purebreds.
Remember its never a bad choice to get a pet. Good people adopt pets. But never support kennels or breeders with money unless its a last resort.
