Departments in a branch of the US Military

Several months back, a guy I know in Arkansas told me of a little back-and-forth that went on between a couple guys he knew. One was ex-Navy, the other was former Marine and it went like this:
“Now Joe, you know that the Marine Corp. IS a department of the Navy,” says the Squid.
“Jim, I will and do not argue with you on that point. The Marine Corp. is indeed a department of the Navy,” says the Jarhead. “It is the “MENS” department of the Navy!”
“Hail to the Corp.!”
“Now Joe, you know that the Marine Corp. IS a department of the Navy,” says the Squid.
