I'm doing a bit of brainstorming and sharing it with you all. Please enjoy reading. <3
Miala wrung her hands nervously. "C-Come on, Tanek! Let's get out of here! If the Temple Elders catch us down here, we'll be in deep kudu for sure!"
Tanek scoffed. "Oh, come on. WHat are you afraid of? Ghosts?" Shi asked, wriggling all four sets of fingers ominously at hir best friend.
"Yeah..and the elders.." She said. "Oh, come on. don't you want to impress Knaz?" Tanek asked, trying to give hir friend some kind of incentive to keep going. Shi knew that Miala had a crush on Knazarath, Tanek's older brother. Miala sighed, still wringing her hands. "Yeah, but..." Tanek continued. "Knaz likes tough girls, Miala. If you stay meek and don't take any risks, he's never going to give you the time of day, let alone be your mate."
"Oh, come on!" Miala protested. "You can't really expect that to work on me, can you?"
Tanek shrugged. "It's either do this, or Knaz takes out that Dina Wildor to the solstice dance instead of you."
Miala Growled. "Nuh-uh! She wouldn't know what to do with a boy like Knaz! He's way too headstrong for her! Only someone like me can reign in that boy's anger!" she said matter-of-factly while stomping her foot.
"THen what in the heavens are you waiting for?! Come on! We take a little relic from this old temple and show it to him, and he'll be SURE to want to take you to the dance instead! You HAVE to show him you're brave, or he'll never take you seriously!"
"Oh, Alright, FINE!" Miala said, finally, defeated.
Tanek grinned. "Alright! Follow me!" Miala shook her head, rolling her eyes as they entered the old temple. The guards were on break, having lunch around the bend and out of sight, giving them plenty of time to sneak past the massive cavern entrance and into the old temple.
Along the path into the temple were a myriad of large, rounded stones, Each one had a spiral, or a series of spirals, carved into them. They were anywhere from 2 feet, to 7 feet high, arranged in a spiraling pattern just outside the main entrance. Tanek and Miala hid behind the largest of these, making sure the guards weren't nearby before running into the old temple as quickly and silently as their moccasined feet would carry them.
The large, rounded stones were situated in a spiraling pattern. It's said that during ancient rituals, members of this ancient faith would walk the circle and pray.
Nobody really knew who'd built it, or why, or how long it had been there. It had been discovered by villagers not long after the Fall of the Hammer, but, by then, had already been all-but-abandoned, some of the stone work having been torn down and hauled off to build walls and other structures in the village.
Inside the old temple, lichen and vines hung down low over the walls. Ancient cave paintings littered the walls, ceiling, and even the floors. There was a strange air in the chamber that always felt odd to Tanek, who'd frequented this place many times on hir own in the past. The paintings on the walls were ancient, some even seemed to have been deliberately marred or otherwise vandalized in the past, as the ancient writing was missing in several places, scratched out cruelly by some unknown means. Elder scribes had translated what they could of the ancient writing, finding them to contain ancient omens of famine, destruction, life, and death. The heads of several statues were missing entirely.
Ancient carvings in the stone floor of the temple indicated where a ritual circle had once been, and an old stone statue, adorned with spirals and triangles and other odd markings, sat in the middle. It stood some 18 feet high, and was built to resemble a female figure with no face. Spirals adorned it's stomach and head, with a third surrounded by triangular patterns along the breasts of the statue. Two large rings surrounded it, like 2 sets of arms held high over it's head.
Tanek and Miala wandered about the barely-lit cavern. Though this place was barely used, there were those who felt that keeping it in as good a condition as they could would appease whatever gods it was erected to from visiting wrath and ruin upon the people. In the farthest wall of this cavern, a massive stone temple had been carved from the living rock, and ancient brickwork rose up about 20 feet high. These ancient bricks and stones had been stacked almost seamlessly, though it was apparent that they didn't have the best workmanship, as a lot of bricks were unevenly cut and stacked. At one point, the brickwork seemed to change in color and craftsmanship from a deep reddish brick to a more pale, chalky stone.
THere were still ancient tapestries hanging from the walls and vaulted stone ceilings, stalactites and stalagmites covered the floor and ceiling, and carvings of spirals seemed to be randomly littered throughout.
Tanek and Miala approached the far wall closer to the old temple, where two massive doorways yawned before them, one partially hidden by collapsed stonework. There was another, smaller statue like the one in the main room standing here, partially destroyed, with the fallen bits neatly arranged at its feet by the village elders as a form of reverence. THe head on this particular statue had been marred badly. It's face had been destroyed by either falling rock, or malicious temple robbers looking to scavenge ancient relics for profit. It, too, had a feminine aesthetic to it. Tanek walked up to it, tracing the one remaining eye.
Tanek stood there for a long moment, looking at the statue and the strange spiraling patterns all over it's body. While most people who visited this place felt uneasy, Tanek felt strangely at peace within this place. When shi came here, it seemed all hir bad luck just went away.
Tanek's bad luck was notorious. It had caused so much trouble for the village at times that they had meetings about hir bad luck and how they could swear that if shi were ever allowed to work the fields and crops, shi'd destroy everything and they'd all starve to death, so hir place had never quite been found within the hierarchy of the Village, and the village Elders were constantly on hir case about being aloof and never paying enough attention to hir studies. Shi would always ratehr be out exploring the island, sitting on it's edge and wondering about what existed beyond the maelstrom that protected their floating island home. Shi could see most of the other islands from hir favorite spot, each circling a central island with a massive tree at it's center that towered over all the islands. It's root systems held the other islands together in their syncronis orbits around the central island. Shi had always bee quite fascinated by it, wondering how it had gotten there, floating above a vast ocean below.
Miala sighed, speaking up nervously. "COme on..let's go...we shouldn't be here at all!" She stammered. "Oh, come on!" Tanek said, grinning. "Where's your sense of adventure?"
"It's back in the village, where it, and myself, belong.." "Oh come on. All you need to do is take a piece of this place back and show Knaz, and he'll date you for sure!" Shi grinned, looking the old statue over. "Take this thing's head, for instance..I'm pretty sure that it's just sitting up there..look how bad the neck is cracked. If we show this to Knaz, he'll date you for sure and forget allll about that other girl!" Tanek reached up to take the head in both hands, and tugged on it. "Y-You really shouldn't do that, Tanek! What if you anger the spirits?"
"Oh, come on. What could possibly go wrong?"
And in that moment, Tanek's left foot came down on a sharp pebble. Shi yelped, fell backward, and reached out to grab the old cloth tapestry to keep hir balance, only for it to rip in hir grasp. Shi fell back against a stone pillar that was supporting part of the wall, nudging it just enough to cause a large chunk to fall toward hir. Miala shouted and shoved Tanek away. in the process, the cloth tapestry flew from Tanek's hand and landed in one of the temple's torch basins, lighting on fire and igniting the dead lichen hanging from the ceiling. A section of wall gave way, and a small metal spiral fell from the wall above the alcove where the old statue had been placed, and smacked Tanek right between the eyes. There was a flash of light, and Tanek felt a cold chill run through hir body like electricity before shi collapsed. The last thing shi heard was the crackling of fire, the sound of Miala whimpering in pain, and a faint, distant voice shi had never heard. "...you've come....Finally, you've come...my vessel...Welcome, my child...You have so much to learn..."
That was the last thing Tanek recalled before waking up outside the temple, surrounded by concerned villagers, the elders, and open air. Smoke was pouring from the cavern entrance. One of the guards rushed out of the cavern, smoke billowing around him. In his arms, he carried Miala. He laid her down and Miala's parents rushed to her side, yelling and crying out. She wasn't moving. "She's not breathing! Someone help us!" "M-Miala?" Tanek sat up, hir mother, father, and brother were there, standing over hir. "W-what happened?" Tanek's mother held her daughter close. "Oh, my child, I'm so glad you are okay!" Hir father wasn't so happy. "What the hell were you thinking?! You know it's forbidden to enter this temple! And now look what you've done!" He said, angrily pointing toward the cavern entrance, smoke still billowing from the entrance to the cavern. Knazarath, seeing that Tanek was okay, rushed over to where Miala's parents and an elder were trying to revive her.
"Miala!" Knazarath shouted, being stopped by one of the village elders, who closed his eyes and shook his head. "It's too late...she's gone.." Knazarath blinked at the old cat, jerking his shoulder out of his grasp. "No! It can't be! She can't be gone!" He shouted, growing angry as he shoved passed the elder and rushed to Miala's side. THere, he found Miala, laying on her back, several cuts and bruises on her body from the collapse of the wall. Her left arm was broken, and there was singing on her fur and several severe burns to her legs.
Tanek had stood up by this time, but felt woozy, collapsing again and holding hir head. a severe, migraine-like headache came suddenly upon hir and shi fell unconscious to the ground.
Miala wrung her hands nervously. "C-Come on, Tanek! Let's get out of here! If the Temple Elders catch us down here, we'll be in deep kudu for sure!"
