Where's the Box Been?
Hey ya'll, I live... I need to stop making that joke.
Alright, so it's been like 4 months without a word here and I should probably explain where I've been. As some of you know I do seasonal work with my local Board of Elections, which explains my absence for a few of the months. Normally I can keep writing and uploading during a big chunk of election work, since the hours don't get murderous until really close to the election, but the midterm was way bigger than we expected (my county nearly ran out of ballots and we always over-order!). To top things off one of the local races came down to about 150 votes and we nearly had a re-count, which kept a lot of us working extra.
But Box, I hear you saying, that only accounts for things up until November and it's January now, what happened? Well the Election job ran until late November, then I took a little time off to get things back in order, then my step-mother's father passed away. He was a good man, but I hardly knew him. It did mean I'd be house sitting for my father's dog, who is ancient and beloved by my step-mother. So that takes us to mid-December. I was working on some things in that time, but then got distracted by the holidays.
Then my step-mother started coughing up blood. Long story short her immune system decided there was something wrong with her lungs, namely that they existed. She's recovering nicely now, but it was a close call for a second there. Honestly it came down to a coin toss; her symptoms could have been an auto-immune disease or an infection. Steroids would treat the auto-immune but kick an infection into overdrive, while antibiotics would treat an infection but agitate her immune system. In other words the treatment for one would kill her if it was the other, but she'd die anyway if they waited for the tests to come back to confirm one or the other. Yeah, it was that close of a call. Like I said, she's doing better now and looks like she'll make a full recovery.
So what's the tl;dr? Well I'm finally back here and commissions are open once again! Hopefully I won't have another medical emergency in the family that pulls me away from the writing anytime soon.

Hanging around you enough, I read this whole journal in your voice. o3o
As to losing a loved one that really didn't happen. My relationship with my step mother is more one of respect than love, and she's pulling through. As to her father, who did pass, I can't say I loved him. In the 20 years my father's been married, I met him maybe a dozen times. He was a good man, but I didn't really know him. In any case he had Ahlzeimer's, so the man I knew was long gone by the time he passed away.
