Fake-miibos would not be a option for you I guess (aka: Using rewritable NFC chips on which you copy the BIN files of real Amiibo cards - so that you can at least get the items/characters/etc. )

I do admit though I'd love to get my hands on some real ones, but only if financially feasible

Another option would be the "N2 Elite" (formerly "Amiiqo" I think) or the "PowerSaves for Amiibo". The first one is a puck that has about 200 "slots", but I think there's some issues with reusing slots, while the second one has both a read/write base and a tiny puck that stores a single amiibo at a time, but I believe you can buy additional pucks if you want.

I have the PowerSaves, and I can say it works well, though it can be a pain to set up with downloaded .bin files. I never got a chance to use the N2 Elite. When I was looking for something, they were off the market because they were in the middle of switching names. ^.^;;
