Posting this here is ironic, but I'm starting to think there's more negative than positive gained from how easily people can contact artists. I think people have much healthier conversations in real-time among smallish groups, so I've given up on most social media side from a few Telegram groups.

I shouldn't tell artists how to do comms, but I don't want to hear their lazy hot takes and they shouldn't get to hear mine, unless I write a letter, put a stamp on it, and walk it out to the mailbox. Artists can and should have the liberty to communicate through their work, and consumers should talk about its merits among their peers. I do want to leave room for protests and boycotts, which are necessary bandaids wherever markets are but that's nothing new.

I did notice that this poster complains about Marvel movies and fills the Patreon with takedowns of blockbusters, and I know punching up is totally different than punching down, but they're also financially dependent on moral outrage while keeping this crap in the discourse. I know it's more complicated than singling out a single studio, but my solution is to never pay to see a Marvel movie, never subsidize critiques of Marvel movies, and seek out stuff that's actually good instead. Then maybe I'll tell friends about it. I don't think this is too radical.

I put in a very few, poor words the essence of the post, it's about much more than simply that, but I don't want to basically rewrite what's in there. Like, I think the marvel movie part and comms are secondary to the main message. Or am I missing a link? If so I'm more than willing to read through it if you're willing to write to me again. Discussions are important, whether we agree or not and I want to make sure I'm getting what you're saying before answering properly.

I could have been more direct: I think people spend too much time giving lazy hot takes because it takes only a few seconds, and there’s often no barrier to contacting the artist directly. This leads to angry mobs, often made up of young people who just need to mature and discuss things amongst themselves.

I agree with the original post, but I think it’s a little pointless because things won’t change until social media is reshaped to not propagate this viral idiocy. We’re already seeing this in response to vaccine conspiracy theories, election interference, etc.

Thanks for rewriting it for me, I had never thought it this way. I guess it's not always all that good to be in direct contact with your fandom. I wonder what would have happened to more popular creators if they were to be so close to their fanbase. I imagine George Lucas wouldn't have even made the prequels. And this is the least worrying consequence, seeing how things are going today.
