It's a goddamn shame considering China's previous place in history, and how old their civilization is. We owe a lot to the ancient Chinese with regards to things like technology and philosophy, but the modern one? Nothing but sweatshop produced clothing, really. Well, leaving aside the whole "the west is the U.S." thing, there's the fact Asians, especially East Asians, has done this since centuries ago, hence the reason why Japan, Korea and other Asian countries has very similar stuff, like pagodas and their writing systems. This is not always a bad thing, however, albeit in this case, especially in the Chinese case, this is mostly a case of the Chinese taking advantage of their position as a member of the United Nations Security Council and having veto power to do whatever they want without very few consequences.

Well, when I said "the West", I was also considering the mess the UK's in with Brexit, and crap with the borders and how Russia was just able to annex Crimea without Europe doing anything, Greece's financial troubles, France's.. a lot of things, etc. So if it came off as U.S.-centric, sorry, but I didn't wanna have to type all that out, too.

And yeah, appropriation is fine if it's done well, because that's called progress. Like you mentioned, buildings, writing systems and so on were all heavily inspired by one another, but they also weren't being done in the same manner as now. Basing your language on a neighbor's to facilitate better trade (or just because they like it), as the Japanese have with Chinese, isn't the same as, say, taking someone else's property, claiming it as your own, then selling it. Like those fake Apple stores in China that claimed to be the Real McCoy, but weren't. Which hurts the consumers of ANY nationality, not just the company, because you aren't getting what you think you are.

I'd say it is China's "do anything for a Yuan" attitude. The communist government has laws against this sort of thing on the books to pull out to show when other governments complain but like a lot of chinese laws, they're selectively enforced. In fact China has the most personal freedoms of any country in the word because the police don't enforce many laws at all unless you are a foreigner or they have good reason to. China makes the Ferengi look like amateurs. This also why the chinese don't trust there own food supply and you can't drink tap water.
