Honestly - and this comes from a small business owner (arts, as well) - you're gonna have to jump into the pool and swim for a while. If you're reluctant already, devoting yourself to that endeavor may not be for you. But if you dream of the ability to work on *your* work, at your pace (relatively), and you have the wherewithal and resources, you may regret never making the leap. It's fulfilling, but it's definitely for the stubborn and not-easily-deterred.

I mean, yeah, I've given it a lot of thought. I know it's a big commitment but I also know that I'm capable of working diligently on projects. The Growing Concern animation took a solid six months of working on it every day, and I mean EVERY single day. No telling how many hours I put into that. So I know that I can. I'm just trying to gauge interest. ^^ My current job is nice but leaves me unfulfilled. I would rather spend my time doing something that I actually like and produce work that other people can enjoy.

It's been worth the risk, on average, for me.
However, you have to start with something you can reasonably survive on. Unless you're charging tens of thousands for that 6-month animation you're going to starve.

I would be open to the idea of supporting you, your macro/growth animations are great. Personally, I think the focus should be on animations initially, even if using old assets for now. Perhaps down the line you can open up voting teirs and such like Acheroth does.

Does this mean we get to see more of Klaus and his bigness/growth? If so you get all of my support, as your work with that dobbie left me speechless a few years ago. Growing Concern is a rare gem made with a lot of heart that won't be surpassed anytime soon, even by some other good animators on here (ex. cantstopgrowing, diablotherex, jamesfoxes, h0rse, doublescale etc..).

Personally I'm in the process of changing jobs, so my support tier will vary depending on that, but even at its smallest I would happily contribute 10-15 per month. Once my financial situation is stable I'd happily offer twice that amount or more, after seeing your roadmap as it starts to flesh out. I'm sure many on here share my thoughts and would happily support you in any project. It's one of the greatest traits of this community. Happy to see you back.

I'd love to back you full time, but I don't think you should expect to launch a Patreon or Kickstarter, wait for it to fill up to some specific level, and then quit your job and start animating. You'll need to get people's attention by finishing a few demo animations first. Putting out teasers is much better for catching people's attention and it will also help them understand what they're paying for, and demonstrate your commitment. Also, putting stuff behind a paywall is unfortunately the only way to guarantee people will pay, and you'll want to get them on the hook and keep them there.

There are a few time indie animators like my buddy sprucethedeer - he hovers around 1k/month on Patreon, which gives him enough time to put out short animation projects and interactives every few weeks. You could have a hustle like that pretty quickly and then build up to full time.

If you're seriously considering this, I think you should launch a Patreon sooner rather than later, start animating immediately, and consider the first job to build up hype for yourself and patrons, with the goal of going full-time as more of a medium-term prospect rather than the starting point.
