I've had my Cat Mystery for 18 years. Weird story: During a very dark time in my life where I was seriously considering running away from everything or ending it, I was invited to go spend a weekend with a friend a few states away. Along my trip I got lost, ended up in a small town and had to pee. I drove around everywhere and couldn't find any place that was open. Finally I found they had a small college in that town. I parked and ran up to the building. Locked. Next building, locked. Having an emergency brewing, I tried one last building, and bam it was open. But the bathrooms on the main floor were locked. I saw a sign for the downstairs bathrooms and sprinted down there. Relief at last.
As I was washing my hands I heard the faintest of meows. I looked around and didn't find anything. I saw an open window above one of the stalls and figured it must have been outside. But as I got closer to the stall I heard it again, this time it was obvious it was inside the bathroom with me. I opened that stall door and found this very small, very wet, week or so old baby cat in the toilet. It must have fallen through the window. I picked her up and went outside to investigate. I couldn't find anything outside.
A campus police officer showed up while I was out there. I showed him what I found and asked what I should do. He said there was no vet anywhere near their town but suggested that he put a report of found animal in the local paper. He took my number and I took the cat. No one called for a few days, so I decided I should just keep her.
She has been with me through college, through 3 homes, finding my wife, and two kids. But now I have to say goodbye. Her kidneys are failing. I don't know if I can tell the Dr to put her down. But I know I can't just let her suffer for me. I feel like a horrible person because I know what I need to do, but I just don't think I can.
