Looking for Opinions!!
It's getting to that time again where I open commissions once more.
That being said... I'm wondering again what 'model' of taking commissions is best.
If you guys could let me know what you think/what option is best, I'd love to hear your opinions! <33
• A) Post journals with limited slots, then have slots claimed on a first come first serve basis. (CURRENT SETUP)
Pros: Fast, simple, and lower overall wait times in queue. (~2 Weeks)
Cons: Have to wait for journal announcements. Not everyone is around when the slots are announced. Can be somewhat luck-based.
• B) Have an 'unlimited queue', always open, and commissions are done in order.
Pros: No waiting for slots to open, everyone gets a chance no matter the timezone or schedule availability. No need to pay until you are out of queue.
Cons: Much longer wait times in queue (likely months).
• C) Post journals with an application-based form, leaving it open for a week, then I personally choose which commissions I'd like to take on.
Pros: Lower wait times in queue (~2 weeks), everyone gets a chance no matter the timezone or schedule availability.
Cons: Have to wait for journal announcements. Can be disheartening to not have your application chosen.

Yeah, I've been working with the A concept for a while, and my biggest feedback from it is, "Dang, missed it again." So I feel like it might be time for a change.
More YCHs you say... Well, I do enjoy making them. I'll keep that in mind!
Oh thank you!
I think A or B are more fair
C means that you can pick commissions in batches and work on things you know you like, which means you'll enjoy the work you're doing more and hopefully not burn out.
There is also another option I've seen some artists do where you they use a random number generator to choose slots. This gives everyone a fair chance and you won't have to worry about feeling bad for not choosing one commission over another.
B is door open to chaos and work overload, so A is likely the best option. I think people who complain about the first come first serve rule aren't being very honest here, since I firmly believe that you'll prepare for something in advance when you really want it (mostly since you warn before opening) and as such implies that missing getting the opportunity is plain simply their fault and not yours for going that way about it. :|
However, here's what's important. As the artist, you're always free to tell people what you want/like/can feel like drawing (and what you don't) through ToS, as well as entirely free to refuse a commission if you don't feel like doing it, which is why you don't need C to... pick?
As for the first come first serve rule, as an artist that has opened commissions several times in the past, I set up a "loyalty" based system where if someone misses an opening A-style multiple times, then they'll get a guaranteed slot next time, forcing a rotation of commissioners.
Your call!
It'd be like "hey I don't care for that but aw, I'll have some pity this time!" kinda horrible... XD
I dunno, at the end of the day this situation is just a reflection of what the artist is like and feels most comfy with, there aren't really bad choices for an artist that isn't specifically looking for money.
I never have any problem with requests falling outside of my comfort zone, as I do work with a ToS.
If I went with C, I know for sure I'd base my picks off of creating a healthy mix of sequences and single illustrations. Probably less-so on the content, unless something is in a grey-area of personal comfort or something.
That being said, I think to keep things as fair as possible and taking all the opinions into account, I will probably do an alternating system for openings. That being: C, C, A, C, C, A...
That way, schedules and timezone conflicts can be avoided for those who work or sleep during my openings, AND from time to time, every idea gets an equal chance.
And also throw more YCHs into the mix!
Hopefully this model will work out better than the current one. And thanks again for the input
Typically people don't commission artists at random. They see an artist doing a piece or a theme they enjoy, then they browse that artist's work, and afterwards decide, "Hey! I like this artist's work and their themes are similar to mine! I should commission them sometime."
And worst case scenario, they can always ask about a particular subject or theme ahead of time to see how it would go. Problem solved. =)
There are a lot of artists on FA that I would LOVE to work with , including strawberry..(price not even being an object if its the right time of the year..) but either the comms slots are filled within 2 seconds of opening, or.. you have something like this where.. maybe you're not good enough and lose out after becoming emotionally invested in it. I usually don't approach people for such things unless I have a moment of ""bravery.."
I know, that sounds selfish, perhaps. This isn't about me. I write (cos I can't draw) and I know from.. a little bit of experience that people pushing you to do things you don't want to do can feel like sandpaper on the brain. As such, unilaterally saying that C is bad, would make me a hypocrite.
I'd think the "almost" always open.. sort of an A/B combo might work better from a consumer standpoint, but, as the producer, its ultimately up to you how you conduct business.
I don't mind waiting for quality work, so long as an expectation of completion time is available.(or at least a ballpark...)
It depends on the perspective. As a creator, C is the logical answer so that your craft remains something that you enjoy and challenges you at a pace you feel most comfortable, as a consumer, B is my preferred answer, as it'd allow me to "throw money at the problem" and just wait for the ups guy to drop it off, so to speak.
Variations might be the happy medium. A most of the time, then maybe C around special events or when you're feeling motivated for something specific.
Just my thoughts, anyway.
C is actually kind of bog standard. If anything, you might even have "Themes" that you are in the sudden mood to draw for a tiny or slightly higher prio (depending on your urge to draw) or any buttload of reasons.
Heck you could literally say:
"October - Interests: Halloween, Full Moons, Tea, Wolves, And Spookies." or something like that.
Thank you for your input. <33
