I'd say that if he's willing to put football and school so much ahead of his partner that he feels he has to end the relationship that you're better off without him. If you really love a person, you find a way to make it work, even if yuo don't have much time to be able to talk to them or be with them.

Count this as a blessing and get out while you can. You should be the most important person to your partner, not football or school. A relationship is not some demanding chore, it's a pleasurable thing that helps every day that much better, if one feels that it is something that can be shelved - like education, or sports - in the face of more important things then that person does not understand what a relationship is about.
