Dark Forest
“Grand mother always told not the venture off in the forest after dark but she would never say why.”
The village has always been small and feared anything odd and unusual but there was always one month in the year where odd and unusual was the normal way things where, the village always called it the month of terror, when the moon turned blood red and the night lasted three weeks. Every year when the sun raises on the dawn of the fourth week the village is always stained with blood and covered with the tracks of beasts no one has ever seen. The month of terror always happens between the two hottest months of the year but it gets so cold during that month the elders say it rains ice. This year I turn twenty and I’m expected to wed before the month of terror but I wish to see the blood moon before I wed just once before I devote my life to a husband I never choose.
Year after year the darkness comes and every year our young hunters fight the creatures that come with the darkness. For the pack it is a rite of passage from youth to adult and those who are ill prepared or not ready never return alive but for the past few years the creatures have grown stronger and more of our young hunter return dead our numbers are thinning but if we don’t stand and fight our world is lost. The human will never know what happens in these woods or in their village during the blood cycle. They fear the forest and us. Our sister pack of dire wolves fell to the darkness years ago only one pup survived and we took him in and raised him as one of our own, now he is of age and I only hope he is ready for the trials ahead.
