Some pondering
Time for another random thought from the wuff.
The Great War, WWI, the War to End All Wars (at least until the sequel came out) is something that's been on my mind for a bit now.
Mainly since I don't really see much being done with that as a setting for.. anything. Not so much for creating things out of what actually happened, but that this time period itself isn't really used as often, or as effectively, as I think it perhaps could be. You know, take the state of the world, the technology, things like that, and really see what you can make out of it. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places? *shrugs*
Ah well. The thing that's been bugging me the most, and something that I figured I'd put out there for discussion is: Would WWI be considered more Steampunk or Dieselpunk?

Going from marching across open fields, rank and file, wearing brightly coloured uniforms, and horses, to using things like machine guns, tanks, and aircraft.
Maybe this could be it's own thing? No idea what to call it. Trenchpunk? Eh, doesn't have the best ring to it.
Personally Trenchpunk or Gaspunk might be the best fitting names in my opinion since ww1 usually brings up trenches and the use of terrifying chemical weapons. Others might think differently though so who knows.
-A fitting example of how quickly tech changed in those 4 years.
I guess people don't; use WW1 as much because its seen as 'boring' compared to WW2, and how the technology of the time isn't as 'cool' looking as WW2's stuff was. (Even tho WW1 gave us the first tanks, and well, grenade-crossbows before proper anti-tank guns were mass produced)
Trenchpunk does sound kinda cool.
I think a few games have done WW1 in some degree over the years! The most recent ones of course being Battlefield One and Verdun, but older (and more fantastical) entries include Necrovision (WW1 meets Doom-ish Hell n zombies stuff) and 1917 Der Unberkante Krieg (short horror game involving, well, robotic looking dinosaurs attacking a trench, based loosely on accounts of 'monsters' attacking trenches', possibly gas induced madness)
And I think that this 'trenchpunk' thing could have it's own place because of it. Not just because of the strange tech, but also because of the possibility of adventure than many of the punk settings have. Likely a fairly dark one, for obvious reasons, but it's still there.
Aside from BF1, the only other game I can think of in that setting is Valiant Hearts. Good game, kinda sad though. Worth watching a play though of it, if nothing else.
