COVID-19 aka Coronavirus Update 3
General
As of yesterday, 25-MAR-2020, we recorded our first (1st) death as a result of the COVID-19 disease.
The patient was an elderly male with a pre-existing medical condition.
Now more the ever, I'm trying not to give in my recent feelings of anxiety and fright as now the Government is imploring, nay I say, pleading with persons to stay home and avoid going anywhere unless absolutely necessary. Otherwise, the Government, under the advice of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), has said they will impose the Quarantine Act, which has three (3) levels.
Under the Quarantine Act, the Government can do one of the three:
1) They can physically remove you from your residence and place you in an area of quarantine until you're no longer a health hazard to others.
2) They can place you under house arrest and have the police patrol your neighborhood to ensure that you do not leave your home.
3) They can imprison you for a period no less that six (6) months and fine you up to TT$6,000.00.
Now, I'm hoping that things won't escalate to that point where the Government has to impose said act in order to make folks comply and be "socially responsible" but the truth of the matter is, we're stubborn people and I'm almost certain this will happen, short of a national State of Emergency.
The Government continues to reassure the public that there is no need to panic and that they are putting measures in place to assist those who have been affected by the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, that is, to provide a relief grant for persons that were either retrenched, dismissed or are now receiving a reduction in their pay. In addition, I'm grateful to the Ministry's position on providing financial assistance to persons who may be paying rent but cannot afford to do so now, and moreover showing concerning for the nation's children who were receiving meals out of the school feeding programme (which is now on hold due to all schools being closed) and that their parents will be receiving a food card if they were not the recipient of one already.
And they've launched a Psychologist hotline for persons to call if they're experiencing persistent and overwhelming emotions.
So, it's not all bad really but still, I'm hoping that things don't escalate.
Stay safe everyone and wash your hands.
