What Is a Plotweaver?
Good morning!
I opted to do a more concise sort of Q and A of what a Plotweaver is exactly and what they do!
I will be adding to this as needed, but wanted to start a little journal!
Keep in mind this lore is not necessary to your character, and if you want to use them for other purposes feel free to! They do not need to adhere to or follow the lore. This is my in universe reason for creating them in the first place and it's purely for fun!
-What the heck is a Plotweaver?
Plotweavers are essentially the fairy godmothers of Haranu! They help you follow through with the fairy tale that the Mother Weaver has assigned you, which you must complete or risk the fate of being punished by the goddess herself. Whether you're in the role of Red Riding Hood, the Evil Queen, King Arthur, or Robin Hood, a Plotweaver is here to assist you through your story! Folk do not know what their tale and role are until they are informed by a Plotweaver.
Plotweavers are created by the Mother Weaver herself, who created them to help weave stories to be fed to her.
-What is Haranu?-
Haranu a continent in the universe in which Plotweavers canonically live. The setting is medieval fantasy. Haranu itself is actually an elder spider goddess called the Weaver (Or Mother Weaver) who laid down to rest in order to create the land at the request of mortals. In exchange for essentially killing her physical form she cursed the land, forcing those tethered to it to live out fairy tales in order to entertain her. Those who could not fulfill her wishes would be punished, but she became aware that without guidance to know their roles and fulfill them they would give her nothing, so she wove together children that would help guide folk to their designated roles.
If you have a Plotweaver they do not have to live here, and you are not forced to to confine your Plotweaver to this continent or universe/setting!
-What are Plotweavers capable of?
Plotweaver can sense what cursed role has been put upon an individual. They can tell how your future will vaguely be and will help guide you along your path. In some cases you may be steered down a path of glory, in other cases it may be a path of tragedy. One cannot simply refuse their role, and a Plotweaver is aware of that. They CAN help you bend the story a little in order to give it an interesting twist, but you cannot completely deny your designated fate. The story of Cinderella, Goldilocks, or any other story doesn't have to be completely accurate or perfect to the original story.
Plotweavers are capable of bending reality in small amounts to help lead others to their fairy tale destinies. They can alter the appearance of objects. Dresses, carriages, and homes are capable of being magicked into a new appearance by their will. Usually the magic is temporary, but a Plotweaver is capable of permanently changing the make and look of something.
Haranu, the continent, is lined with invisible threads. These threads have no physical form, and can only be seen and interacted with by Plotweavers. As long as they can make contact, they can use these to travel quickly across the continent and to feed stories to the mother weaver.
Plotweavers must train their magic if they intend to defend themselves. With enough practice they are able to branch out and master other forms of magic for offensive and defensive properties. The filigree along their bodies act as a conduit for channeling magic. It's rumored that silver filigree Plotweavers are more adept with magic, but it's never been proven! If a Plotweaver damages or shatters their horn they will struggle to create magic. Their magic is prone to failing as their horn is where the magic reaches its focusing point. The lack of a magical conduit causes the buildup of energy to create anomalous traits.
-Are Plotweavers tied to one story, and one story only?-
No, Plotweavers hop from story to story. While you may see some "thematic" Plotweavers that have appearances that may be a call to certain stories, they aren't tied to that specific story. They weave varied tales and help guide heroes, villains, and victims alike. A Plotweaver can go from helping someone find their Cinderella, to encouraging someone to bite into a poisoned apple. They don't limit or corner themselves to one story if they can help it, as it keeps them from getting in trouble with the Mother Weaver.
-What happens when a Plotweaver completes a story?-
A Plotweaver essentially "feeds" the story to Haranu, who decides the quality of said story. Plotweavers have their own personal thematic tome where they scrawl the happenings of each fairy tale the weave. When it is complete they peel the words from the parchment, transferring them to Haranu through threads of fate webbed across the continent.
-What happens if a Plotweaver doesn't fulfill their duty to the Mother Weaver?
It has been said that any Plotweaver that would defy their role as a weaver of tales is contorted into a horrible monstrosity. None have been recorded, but they are referred to as Plotwisters. It is said that anyone who looks upon a Plotwister has never lived to tell the tale.
-Are Plotweavers evil?-
As a whole Plotweavers are not evil. There are some who take pleasure in watching people suffer, and find darker stories and endings enjoyable. There are some who are more compassionate and kind, who try to find the best ending for everyone. There are some Plotweavers who simply feel nothing at all. It varies from Plotweaver to Plotweaver. A Plotweaver, like the people of Haranu's land, will be punished for not doing their job. They are equally as trapped as the people they guide.
-Can a Plotweaver escape the fate of assisting others in completing stories?-
Yes, but they must make a deal with the Mother Weaver herself. They must exchange their magic and fulfill a legendary tale in order to cease the role of a plotweaver. Doing so also permits a Plotweaver to have children, as they normally cannot.
-Are there male Plotweavers?-
Plotweavers come in any gender and body type. They can be tall, short, muscular, full figured, slender, or anything. There are no limitations to how a Plotweaver can look physique or gender identity wise. Plotweavers are intended to be all inclusive.
-How long to Plotweavers live?
As far as it's been recorded? Forever. Plotweavers are essentially immortal.
-Can a Plotweaver be killed?-
Yes, but on a continent that has a goddess watching over all and ready to punish any who defy her it is... Ill advised to harm her children.
