When the mob mentality kicks in

This is not something I usually talk about. It's in relation to the recent incident in the United States regarding George Floyd, right now I want to talk more about a certain part of the reaction. A lot of people have a very strong reaction, a strong opinion to the incident. And I agree. What happened there was needless and totally avoidable and communities have the right to be outraged. But I believe that it does not give people the right to harm and jeopardize the safety of others, not just with the riots where people have their blood rushing and they react in a way they deem fit, but online spaces as well.
Online, people have taken to doxing individuals over issues they deem egregious to the George Floyd incident. And yes, some of these issues are egregious and in poor taste, but I'm in favour of removing the people from the platform or limiting their reach rather than jeopardizing their safety. You know what doxing is. Releasing private information to the public. Name. Email. Phone number. Workplace. Place of residence. Family. The kind of sensitive information you don't want to be released to a wide audience.
I don't talk much about politics or other sensitive issues here or on other platforms because I'm not politically charged and I don't want to mix what I usually do, but this morning I saw on my twitter feed of more people being doxed, and one of the people doxed is a girl in high school. So...you just doxed a minor because of her poor taste jokes. A high school girl. Under the United Nations criteria, still a child. You just released the information of a child with the explicit intent to harass or cause her harm. I hope I don't have to say how wrong this is.
Don't do that. Don't go after children because you think you have the moral justification to do it, this is not a case of you enacting justice, this is a case of you with a hammer and everything around you looks like a nail. Don't harm people in general because you think it is justified. Don't forget that whenever you act up you're not only harming one individual, you're also harming the individuals around them. This is true in real life and online. Stop using the silence is complicity mentality for everyone you meet, stop viewing everyone around you as either friend or foe.
On my part this is very reactionary, I'm not that kind of person and I don't want to talk more about the situation, I just felt like sharing my mind once and that is it.📓 Keep your pants dry, your dreams wet, and remember, hugs not drugs.📓 I'm working on a fantasy JRPG. I’ve sadly had to stop following some people here because of their hot takes and.. worrisome takes as well. I’m a Canadian, looking in horror at what is going on to my neighbour south. And hearing about that suggests that they are of the same mindset as the rioters who think they can get away with stealing, looting and killing.. like the Purge.

God that is horrible, I'm like you this is why I don't post political views of my own on the internet (besides not being that politically correct as well lol)
Same as me. I tend to try to keep this place clean of any sensitive issues but everyone has a breaking point I guess.
