First time gecko owner (advice and help please)
Hey everyone. I'm a first time gecko owner, and I just had a few questions I was hoping that could be answered.
I have a 3 month old male gecko, I've had him for about a week now and he has only pooped and eaten once. I've heard this is normal but it still worries me. I was curious if those little jelly pots are okay for him? I've put one out and he took a few licks of it and went into one of his hides haha I assume they're not very nutritious for him but wanted him to at least try something. I'm currently trying to feed him mealworms in a shallow dish.
How often do they drink? I have a bottle cap filled with water at the moment, as the reptile shop had those in their store vivs.
I also have a wet hide for him on the warmer side of the tank, can this replace a larger water bowl for him to soak in?
I'm a bit of a night owl and stay up late working, because of this I have my lamp turned on. Is it okay for me to put a blanket/towel over the glass part of the viv to simulate darkness/night? (his viv is mainly wood with glass doors)
I live in a shared apartment so the only place for the viv is in my bedroom, is it okay for me to vacuum around him, or should I put him in a breathable tub in another room for a short time while I clean my bedroom?
The reptile store I bought him from said he was a Tremper Sunglow. I'm unsure of he is albino or not as his eyes look like a deep red. Here's a link to a few pics of him https://imgur.com/a/3M3Flac
Judging from the pictures (taken fairly recently) when would he be due to shed? I'm unsure what colour he'd turn as he's already fairly light coloured.
His temp is around 27-30 celsius, and his humidity is around 40 during the day but goes up during the night to around 50-60 which is not ideal. I have a sock of rice in there too, to try and bring it down a bit.
I also have a uvb light for him, but I've read that they don't like them/don't really need them if there's lots of natural light.
Any advice and tips are welcome! Thank you :)
He's got a make shift wet hide in the middle but I wan't to move it more to right on the warmer side. I'm currently using unscented paper towels for both outside and inside the wet hide.
I'm unsure what the tank size is exactly but I think it is a atleast a 20 gallon, It's an old one from a friend.
I actually don't use any uvb lights for mine and I've never had any problems and I've had my oldest pair for around 6 years. Paper towel is a fail proof substrate to use if you were unsure of that as well. As for the feeding part. He probably is just getting adjusted to his new home. I would get some butterworms or waxworms ( I wouldn't feed him over 2 since they are high in fat). My geckos usually will always go for those. Or possibly even hornworms if you can get your hands on those. Oh and keeping a bottle cap full of calcium powder in the viv is always good to have as well!
Hopefully that helped!! Sorry it was kind of all over the place
I have a couple of pics of his current set up https://imgur.com/a/EgiZiQ4 though I imagine I'd need to upgrade to a bigger one in the future.
Yeah I'm currently using paper towels, I was thinking of buying some reptile carpet when he's older. Though I've heard sometimes the quality of them can be bad and they get their little toes stuck?
I'll be sure to buy some calcium powder tomorrow, as well as see what kind of other food I can get him, butter or waxworms seem like a good idea to see if he'll eat. He has pooped twice now though after googling it, it didn't seem very formed, more of a brown mush and a white uric bit, it didn't look very pellet like. I don't know if this is due to him not eating much...
no no!! you helped a ton, thank you! <3
Also the poop is probably him not eating or possibly his age?
Oh and have you tried feeding him with tweezers? Geckos aren’t the brightest little guys, mine refuse to be anything other than tweezer fed a majority of the time lol
There's been abit of trial and error already, I bought eco earth and moss but the shop owner said I shouldn't use it, since they could eat it by accident. I guess I could see how reptile carpet goes heh, for now I'll be using the paper towels.
ah yes, I've tried to feed him with tweezers rubbing his mouth abit with the mealworm but he just licks it, I think he's abit nervous or just being picky at the moment haha
