power outage
power's been out for over 10 hours, and we don't have an eta when it will be back. any tips for keeping food cool? we bought some ice and filled coolers and moved food from fridge to there, but i'm wondering if there's anything else we can do. i was thinking filling bathtub with cold water and putting coolers in there, but i couldn't find anything online and am worried it will do the exact opposite, since even room-temp water is often used to thaw food.
looking for long-term cooling solutions, just keeping the fridge closed isn't enough at this point.

Putting a lot of ice in the fridge with the food is good, I did that for an outage that endured a week and the food was just fine :P

Just keep the fridge doors closed and you should be fine. They can keep cool for a while as long as you don't let too much warm air in.

only open the fridge and freezer when needed

For future references dry ice can be very useful if you have a place around you that sells it.

OP
we did try to get some, but they were out, and it said not to put it in the fridge or freezer, which would have been easiest... tho online it said to do just that, so, i'm not sure. was hoping someone could give me more definitive info on the dangers of using dry ice in closed containers like that.

Hmm it does look like because of ventilation issues and due to the initial temperatures that putting it in a fridge or freezer not designed for it is strongly not recommended. I guess it's one of those things where you'd have to quickly transfer everything from the freezer/fridge to a chest designed for it and then keep getting replacement dry ice every 24 hours or so.
