Happy National Hobbit Day!
So... Remember how I said in my previous Journal that I would mention why September is an important month within the lore of Tolkien's Middle-earth later on? Well, now's the time to explain, and it all comes back to this day in particular...
Why is September 22nd important to the story, you ask? Simple. It's the date of birth of two important characters within Tolkien's stories: Bilbo Baggins, and his second cousin once-removed, Frodo Baggins! They were both born on the same day, which ended up being one of the minor reasons why Bilbo made Frodo the heir of Bag End in the book; outside of wanting to raise the young hobbit after his parents died from drowning, Bilbo wanted to share his birthday celebrations with Frodo. That's also why Tolkien fans like myself refer to September 22nd as 'National Hobbit Day'.
Oh, and in case you're curious, Frodo turned 33 years old when Bilbo turned 111 (or eleventy-first, as the book calls it) at the start of Fellowship of The Ring. ;)
Anyways, have a happy National Hobbit Day, and a good Autumn Equinox, too! :)
