Looking for artist(s) to work on computer game
5 years ago
First of all, while i haven't posted in a while, i have a lot to post and i'm active here most days if you need me.
That being said lets talk about game design. Please note that while you do not have to read everything i write here most of it will be important for you and i to determine not only if this is right for you, but right for me too.
For a long time i, like most creative people, have wanted to make computer games. Unlike most however, just over 2 years ago, i actually set up a computer game project. Not just for a single game, but for a company that will create and publish computer games, novels, and possibly other things too. A grand dream into which i have put much thought and time.
When i set up this idea i also set up a team. Initially the team was 5 people, and we all collectively understood that our first game would have to be a labour of love. None of us have the money to fund the project up front and as a result we would all have to dedicate time to creating the game against the side of our own lives. This has not changed, however, i was willing to invest up front in software for those who needed it, and i still am. This will be discussed later.
As it stands, and stood, we began as i say just over 2 years ago. At first progress was very fast. I developed the game and worked on the writing, we had 1 dedicated coder, 2 dedicated artists and 1 member who would split between the two. With this amount of people the first level or portion of the game should have taken only a month or two to complete and could have been sold to then pay everyone while we worked on more levels as dlcs, splitting the full cost of the game over these small installments.
However this was not the case. While the writing and development under my care moved fast, the coding was held up by a lack of working assets because unfortunately we had many problems with the artists. This isn't a call out post, i love them all very much, but for their own reasons we were unable to get any work done on assets and that issue chokeholded the entire project.
Roll on 2 years.
This project is extremely simplified. With even one artist creating every single piece i've worked out that if they worked 6 hours a day it would take only 8 weeks to complete something we could sell. I understand people have work of course, so lets assume 4 hours. This entirely depends on the speed at which the artist draws of course, but in only a couple of short months we could be pushing this project forward and even making living wages based on it, allowing us to devote ourselves full time. Then once this game is completed we have at least six other small term easy money projects sat in the wings for development and several larger long term projects as well. My hopes are that we will expand the team after the first game nears or reaches it's conclusion and the additional money from any sales made will then fund the next game in advance, which will in turn build us into a full fledged development team.
So where do you come in, and what are we looking for?
Well first of all while we're currently looking for artists, if you're interested in working on games as a coder don't turn away just yet. While i'm not sure how long it would be until we expanded the team, for our next projects we will DEFINITELY need more than one coder and you could be just what we're looking for.
That being said what we really want right now are artists and i know there's a lot of you out there. We're looking for someone who can complete one full body coloured picture per day, likely in around 4 to 6 hours depending on your schedule. You will also be required to draw backgrounds and likely some assets (little things like item pictures and text borders).
It will be important that an artist (or artists) can style match. There are ways we can ensure this is easier but we want a specific look for the game and we will ask that your work reflects this style. If you consider yourself extremely specialized (cartoons, chibi, curvy etc) then this likely isn't the position for you. Similarly i am not looking for the next Da Vinci, everyone's style comes with unique charms and i'm more interested in your work ethic, your consistency (your work style matching itself every time) and your personality. That being said i do expect an appropriate level of skill, i don't want to offend people but i will have to turn down applicants if they don't meet these requirements.
If you, an artist, wish to learn more about the project or would like to put yourself forward, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am available through notes or can be found on discord (Duck#4543) and would love to talk to you about it. If you have a friend who would be interested, or know an artist who wants to break in to this business, do please talk to them about it or simply share this post around. I'd sure appreciate that.
The first game project, to keep it's development short and easy, is going to be a dating sim, but with a twist. We've worked very hard on making this game enjoyable and atypical, and while we aren't going to give away all the details publicly right now, we will discuss this is more detail with you during or after application.
So please, if you would like to make your dreams come true and help us to create a brand new fantasy studio, talk to me. I want to hear from you. You could be just what i'm looking for.
