Have a Safe Covid Christmas and New Year
Near the start of the year, I had been driving for Uber and Lyft. This was something I had been doing the last two years starting in Jan 2018 to Mar 2020. I had to stop because the risk of catching this "novel virus" would most certainly spelled permanent termination of life for me.
Allow me to explain. I'm considered High risk. I am immune suppressed due to 2 kidney transplants. I have had a quadruple bypass. I'm type 2 diabetic, both from medications I take for anti-rejection and risk of becoming diabetic from a family history of it. I have mild asthma.
The challenge of driving for uber or lyft during the start of this pandemic was not knowing if who I was picking up fell into the asymptomatic category or not. As a civilized society, one would naturally believe common sense things would be taught at an early age. Maybe they were. Maybe stuff like: washing your hands after using the bathroom, brushing your teeth, covering your cough into your elbow, and other common sense measures of hygiene would be employed. However, contrary to my beliefs, people just were not enacting common sense and common decency employment of hygienic measures.
After ending up with a cough that became more persistent, I ended up going to the hospital to get checked out. Thankfully I tested negative for Covid but realized I could no longer really trust driving people around when there's this virus hoping between people who 1. probably don't know they're carrying it due to the incubation period of it. 2. don't believe they have it and think it was just a flu/cold. 3. believed that this virus was a hoax. Not long after my visit to the hospital, the city issued a lockdown in my area. Where i'd already been driving normally, had locked down two days before that, so driving areas became limited any way.
To put it simply in summary , (too late) ,
While I hope and wish for everyone to have a Merry Christmas or which ever holiday that is celebrated during this time of year, as well as a Happy New Year; Please do it safely. Try not gathering in big groups or big family get togethers. wear masks. social distance whenever practical. These steps can help ensure that next year, around this time, our loved ones will have a better chance of still being around.
Thank you , everyone.
