The effect you're describing is generally called "the uncanny valley": which describes the fact that as a 3D image (the term originated in robotics but it can apply to anything trying to "look real") gets closer to photo-realism, our brains go from finding it appealing because it is "stylized", to finding it looking like an imperfect repica, which we instinctively find "creepy", because our brains are trained to recognize an "imperfect human-like THING" as something to be wary of. It's why people describe badly done CGI characters as having "dead eyes" etc.
