wrapping up 2020
It's been so long since I journaled on here that I literally forgot where to click to make one...
Anyway, a few things!
Commissions
I get a lot of questions about how to commission me / whether I'm open / when I will reopen. This is kind of exhausting and I'm working on managing it better, but the point of this journal is so hopefully that happens less. Commissions are still not the majority of my income, so even though I have been taking more of them in the past year or so I still need to have time for the rest of the work I need to do.
The reality of where I'm at with commissions is that demand for my art far outstrips my ability to produce it, even though I've done a lot of work to streamline my process. My YCHs sell out very quickly and when I open for pinups I usually have to close fairly quickly to avoid getting overwhelmed with responses - 99% of the time these offers don't make it to FA because by the time I would post here, my availability is already spoken for. Because of this, the vast majority of heads up for these availabilities has been given via my commission website and twitter.
What this actually means in a purely supply / demand sense is that my prices are too low and I need to reevaluate them, but I'm hesitant to raise them RN because I know the economy has not been kind to most people this year and I'm trying to be sensitive to that. I'm looking at a bunch of options and leaning towards being pickier about what I'm willing to take on.
TL;DR I'm closed right now and won't be opening for regular pinups again this year (maybe a few more YCHs, I'm not sure yet). I need to figure out how I want to rework my process with respect to the above. This is not a call for advice, BTW. I just wanted to give some level of explanation since it's the thing I get asked about the most frequently.
Website
I'm usually pretty behind posting stuff to FA - it's available on my website (monstrousdoctor.com) way sooner than it makes it on here. The site aims to update the first Tuesday of every month and sometimes achieves that, haha.
Books
In the last year I've released 3 books, which is a record for me! Pool Shark, MonClass and Mark of the Worm all received a great reception (Monclass especially, you guys loved that one) and I'm really grateful for it. For next year, I'm tentatively planning:
Bug Bites, an insect / arachnid TF - themed anthology with stories and art
MonClass 2
Candybombed 2 (yes, finally)
and maybe one more, depending. I love working on these because they let me do longer form TF stuff and develop the characters a lot more, which is probably also why I end up doing so many sequels.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a happy and healthy holiday to cap off 2020. It's been a year and I think we all deserve a chill one.
