Rest Easy, Buttercup
Be true to whatever
At about 10:30 this morning, we said goodbye to our oldest corgi, Buttercup.
She was refusing to eat or drink and inactive. The night before, she had a short-lived sort of shaking fit and didn't want to leave the house.
She wasn't skin and bones, but we knew she was hurting. My parents made the call to have her put to sleep this morning.
I wasn't there when her big sister, a border collie named Molly, had to be put down. I've been a wreck. The day just feels so empty without her.
At least I know she's no longer in pain from her liver slowly failing, no more fluid acruing in her abdomen and no more uncomfortable swelling.
Sleep tight, B. I'll see you again someday.

The strangest thing is, I don't know if I'm able to process this kind of thing anymore. My family's first dog, a runty beagle named Luna, died last year, and I wasn't able to see her at all. My sister's family and mine had been in a fight and keeping distance for a few years, when the dog passed, it was sudden. I got a new dog following her, a blue tick hound Misty. She's getting old already, I know that she's going to have her time come soon, probably another couple of years. I don't dwell on the loss of the dogs as much as I do the the pictures that I have and the time that we shared. If you made the dog's life special, you're the real hero of their story. And if I were them, I'd want me to be happy no matter what, just like I was around them when they were here. We'll all get a chance to be together again later, anyway, so why be sad? Grieve, if necessary, because we should. But promise never to forget them and forge your path forwards. Love never dies.

I understand how it is to lose a loved one. Take any break you need, we all grieve differently.
