I mean it had to be set sometime and in all likelihood it's not going to reference the movies much. Word is, Disney is going to distance itself from the sequel trilogy with as little reference to them as possible in future projects. Plus it's thanks to Disney we've gotten the excellent Rebels show, the great final season of Clone Wars, and the pretty good (not amazing, but decent) Rogue One.
Yeah the main trilogy sucked, but one presumes Rogue Squadron is gonna be its own story and those films aren't going to impact the plot, just maybe some general setting stuff like when Ilum showed up in Fallen Order. It didn't matter if you knew that Ilum was the planet they converted into Starkiller Base in ep-VII, but if you did realise it, it was just a neat little nod.
When it comes to movies, Rogue One was great, but also remember the other four movies were hot garbage. I mean Han Solo failed at the box office, a star wars movie failing at the box office is so unheard of. Oh was it because of Fatigue? Well shouldn't marvel movies had experienced that? I mean Marvel was releasing 2-3 movies a year, unlike star wars 1 move a year. I mean since Disney has taken over Star Wars, toys are not moving off of the shelves like they once were. Wonder why. Oh yes this thing called quality control.
Disney's problem is that they didn't put the right people in charge. Does it seem like things are improving... so far. They've won me back a little bit.
As for Rogue Squadron, I enjoyed the books and games that came out when Nintendo 64 and Gamecube were the systems of the time. So please forgive me if I have a problem they are now using it during the sequel era instead of the empire/galactic civil war era that I fondly remember it in. Yea I heard Disney is supposedly distancing themselves from those horrible movies, but I don't know how the inner workings currently are right now, nor is their track record spotless. So yes, I'm going to put my opinion out there because that is my right as is your right that you enjoy this or that. I'm no borg drone (please don't kill me for the star trek reference). If you enjoy the stuff good on you, accept the fact my tastes to the point are possibly different.
If they are going to do Rogue Squadron, they had better have Wedge Antilles involved at the very least. I mean he was in the Rise of Skywalker for a mere couple seconds after his Son Wexley crashed his star fighter into a star destroyer.
I'm not saying Disney did it well, I really can't stand any of the main three sequel trilogy films. Rise of Skywalker especially just felt like a massive middle-finger, and a very shallow note to end things on. Just, that one point has always bugged me as a point of attack considering that same criticism can be lobbied at literally every Star Wars project from the very beginning.
As for the Rogue Squadron film, got to be honest, I don't really mind when they set it if they make a good film. I also don't think it would be improved any by including old characters like Wedge. Shallow fanservice like that for its own sake has been the death of stories, Star Wars especially, so I hope Patty Jenkins -- already a proven and talented director -- can do something good with the material.
Then again, that could come from me not being in any way attached to the old Rogue Squadron games/lore.
If they started messing with an adaptation of, say, Knights of the Old Republic, making a film with that title but ditching many of the things I loved about that game, I may be saying similar things to what you are.
I do agree though the Rise of Skywalker did suck as well. There really wasn't a strong villian, since most of the starting villians were either dead or downright jokes. I was half expecting them to reincarnate Phasma. Instead they reincarnated the emperor instead. Then they did the dagger and had a goonies moment with it and the wreck of the death star.
Yea I didn't enjoy it either, so I could see how the rise of skywalker was bad. Oh well.
Who do you think they are going to fight in the Rogue Squadron movie? Another empire remainant? The first order? The vong? Hope not for the last one, never cared for them much when I read the books. I'm kinda hoping Grand Admiral Thrawn, but he might be the enemy in the several streaming shows they are releasing.
I am looking forward to the Bad Batch, since it will show how the clone army was being integrated into the empire. Could be a nice dark series to say at least and keeps the clone wars look. I wasn't a fan of the Rebels look.
