Art style going forward--including commissions
4 years ago
People probably don't know this because I'm a nobody and like 3 people from here follow me on Twitter, but I've been extremely unhappy with my art style for some time now. While I'm glad people like it enough, I feel it's incredibly bland, generic, and shows a clear lack of fundamentals. It's been a real struggle at times to work on things.
I've tried from time to time to try new things, unfortunately with few if any results, and even less interest from my watchers, resulting in an awful, soul-crushing feedback loop that's actively discouraged and depressed me. Lately I've gone back to an old style I used to poke at years ago that's very reminiscent of the Wind Waker art style, and it's honestly been fucking refreshing. For the first time in what feels like ages I'm actually having fun and liking what I produce. Sadly people don't seem to like it that much, either, but it might finally be time for me to put my foot down and tell myself, "Heck with that, I like it."
Advice I've often seen is "Do what makes you happy, and you'll attract others that also enjoy it." This is probably the worst time for me to start listening to that advice, because I've had to turn down two commissions already and I could really use the money, but I really really just.. want to make content that I like and enjoy. It's important for my overall well-being and my workflow.
Will I ever draw the "old style" again? For personal art only, I think. I'm still playing with the new style a bit; not everything will be quite so "chibi" (god I hate that word), so please don't think I'll only be doing cutesy things!
In short, I'm sorry to the people who like what I've been farting out over the years, but I really need some change, and I want it to stick this time.
Thank you!

Ooh, Wind Waker-y is a pretty good description for it. I think it's really neat, and if you like it, then you should keep with it! It has a lot of character and feels unique.

Sometimes it's good to get back to basics and draw what makes you impassioned about art. Internet stranger supports you too.
