Farewell, Dear Friend.
Today, my wonderful, dear friend
ultrafox was laid to rest.
I had known him for the last two decades, virtually the entirety of my involvement in the furry fandom. He had always been a positive, vibrant and lively presence at UK Furmeets, and at any event he attended.
Ultra was one of the rare people who had time for everyone. He would listen to anyone and everyone's interest politely, with attention and interest, and would have input and things to say himself. He was polite, courteous, gentle and warm as a person, and rarely had a bad thing to say about anyone. I never recall him being cruel, unkind, or mean to anyone in person, and he was always quick-witted, humourous and bright.
He had a wickedly sharp and keen imagination, and was incredibly well-read and well-versed in fiction, which suited him well in the pursuit of his hobbies, and his work as a writer, role-play gamer, and in almost everything he did.
His art is what most people know him for now - he became an absolutely stunning and superb artist. More incredible to realise that he was entirely self taught through hard work, practice, and dedication, he learned from books and attending courses whenever able, learning to draw anatomy and proportions, first with pencil and paper, and then fully immersing and teaching himself digital artistry as well.
Quite appropriate then, that one of his art pieces went to auction at ConFuzzled, and broke all records for the auction, and still holds that position today. I remember seeing him not long after the con, and he was still amazed and astounded at the fact it happened. And yet; he still remained humble and not self-aggrandising about his work. He encouraged others around him in their own work, and to keep working on their art, and whatever their other endeavours were.
He was always an encouragement to me in my own work too. He always had encouragement for me about my writing and artwork, and advice and support to offer whenever anything was tough. When I've struggled with work, with my depression and mood, and anything else, he would always give some sound, plain and simple words of encouragement and support, and would always offer a place to get away from things and enjoy spending time doing things.
He touched many lives in the fandom, especially here in the UK, and I am pleased to know that there are so many of us that can share our memories of him with one another, and celebrate the life he lead, and the joy of it all.
I will miss him immensely, and a bright star has gone out with his passing.
