Siskel & Ebert: Two thumbs up
Number scale (6 being best): 5.2
It can be boring at times, but I was glad to see this movie that starred current game shows who were comedians before being hosts- John Michael Higgins (America Says on Game Show Network: https://www.gameshownetwork.com/america-says Out of my view of JM Higgins, he has aged so fast! ) and Jane Lynch (Weakest Link [second incarnation] on NBC: https://www.nbc.com/weakest-link )- and both were on the syndicated game show-sometimes on the same episode, 25 Words or Less ( https://25words.com/).
As the movie would be a mockumentary, but it was an influence to the Philadelphia's annual hosting of the National Dog Show every US Thanksgiving since 2002: https://nds.nationaldogshow.com/ , the movie would be in good laughs at times intriguing to see on how people would prepare their dogs for the show. Though they aren't really purebreeders-they never said so, but it would have to be a chore to have people have their dogs be in tip-top shape to become best breed, best in group, and then best in show. They would have to settle with at least best in breed, but it is not shown here. Anyway, it is a comedy that in near-RL-events, it was not taken seriously. What is serious is that the dogs used in the movie were really eligible for entry for a dog show that is being held in Canada.
I could not have much to say on the movie because it is 100% improvised and situational. However, It was a good job by the stars that were in the movie to make it a silly movie that seems so real. We have to note that not every dog is friendly when they enter the dog show, and you will see in the movie one example of one being dismissed. In the RL one that you would see in Philly, clearly, the ones who are winners are the ones that have passed the Best in Breed as they have been picked as the best in fitness, gait, health and behavior. Well, here, this was more of an invitational. Many years ago I did attend 2 invitationals, but for these dogs, they were well mannered over at the Niles Dog Show: http://www.niles.org/dog-show/ (I hope that it will be held for 2021- I'd like to see!) Well for one, this one should learn how to be good tempered with or without their favourite toy!
As the movie does give lots of background to the entrants, there is always a story for the dog on how they would live. It would be a good thing to hear if any dog can say what they would think about their masters outside of the dog show-of course, one would say that they would love their owners, and in almost every breed of dog, they aim to please their master. So if it were the winner breed in the movie, they would have to feel pride for winning-if they were more like a feral furry, they would understand it a WHOLE lot more.
Oh the homosexual scenes! Of course that scene of the excessive PDA that Jennifer Ann Coolidge and natural RL lesbian Jane Lynch was a laugher, but look at the MOVIE ACTOR gays that J.M. Higgins and Michael McKean seeing that on TV-that got me!
Clearly, one should know that the owner owns their dog, but NOT VICE VERSA. It is a point to know subtly for one husband/wife entering their dog. Overall, one must know that if you do love your dog, you should be happy, but if you don't, you don't deserve to have one. For the ones that did not win, some did not keep them at the end, but they should have a fate that should be for the better for their lives.
It was entertaining, but although there can be quiet times, it was good to have a laugh now and then. One will have to think about the sacrifices and and the devotion to have a dog win a dog show, and it is this movie that caused Philly to have NBC to have a dog show held annually. They should thank that movie for having that on, and admittedly, I'd like it if one of the stars of Best in Show actually host the Philly National Dog Show as homage to the tie the movie has in making the annual show possible. Good to watch!
And personally, if you want to see more dogs in action, there is an athletic special for dogs on ESPN. Check listings for Dog Day to see dogs jumping, running, swimming and using their agility to win the blue ribbon!
