The ads. I don't think I've ever seen a single ad that even remotely represents the game, and it deeply confuses me how people can care when even the developers give so little of a crap that they can't even accurately portray their own game when advertising it.

"CORGI FLUFFY BUTTWHOOOO~!!!!"

And that makes even less sense.

My understanding is, it's not about selling a game, it's about selling a statement. "I'm cool, I'm hip, I play this game these old fogeys don't get because they aren't cool anymore." etc.

OP
The only statement I get out of it is that they don't know how to sell a game, which is the purpose of an advertisement.

What I don't get is why they keep making furry characters. Are they trying to get me personally to like that game?

Better than just adding generic clothes.

The intended audience might be the players themselves, as weird as that may sound. “You know that cool game you play? You should play some more because it’s cool”

As in the people who are probably even more likely to just skip or ignore the ads because there's no point in seeing something you're already playing advertised.

...There's.. fortnite ads?

I've seen them accompanying YouTube videos every now and then. Usually just involving characters dancing and running around without any representation whatsoever as to the kind of game it is. If I didn't already know any better, I'd assume it's some kind of high octane exploration or life simulation game from the ads.

I know what you mean it seems like the opposite of good advertisement to me, but weirdly it seems like it's working.

Which I would imagine would only lead to disappointment, which would cause the game to receive backlash. I mean, the advertisements make it look like you're gearing up for something exciting, so I'd assume people would then just lose interest and feel mislead when they're instead plunged into 10 minutes of doing nothing before maybe finding somebody to shoot for five seconds, followed by another 10 minutes of nothing happening.

That's true though another way of looking at it is that fortnite is well known enough that the job of the advertisements is to remind people it exists rather than to describe the product. I quite liked fortnite for the brief time I played it, but I couldn't stick with it for more than a few hours personally.

OP
You can't know about something without first learning of it. Nobody's going to just magically know something exists just because other people do, and to lure them in with a fallacy only for them to look into it and learn it's nothing like they were lead to believe is just going to cause people to feel deceived and mislead, and not want to support the product on account of being fed false advertisements.

I suppose what I'm saying on that point is that the advertisements aren't targeting new players but are maybe trying to regain players who fell out of the habit of playing. I'm playing devils advocate more than anything though, personally I think you're right. I'm onto other games now and I'm not going to be picking up another battle royal shooter for a while.

OP
That doesn't make sense to me. If I'm already invested or aware of something, seeing it poorly represented isn't going to make me want to play it again. It's just going to lead to this discussion, and confusion about what they're hoping to accomplish.

Agreed but oh well, I don't think the game is going to continue at the popularity it is for much longer.
