I need to talk about this.
Okay, so...I was planning to make a Proper Statement on this, with art included so it could be noticed and with my words all pre-written out and given extra-careful attention before I comment but...it couldn't wait.
Stop sexualising kids. What do I mean? Keep reading.
When I say "stop sexualising kids", obviously I mean *MOST IMPORTANTLY* don't make, share or promote child pornography, especially if it benefits actual predators. Child pornography means art/work dealing with children in explicitly sexual acts or nude with genitalia showing.
Everybody reading, put a big pin on that. Don't forget that. Because that's the definition of what this stuff is and what you should be disallowing and discouraging.
But there's another part to this too: stop lumping non-sexual portrayals of kids as sexual in itself.
Here's the thing. A lot of people in this community, especially those who grew up fat or had mental battles with their own fixations on fatness *as a kid themselves*, come here for acceptance. They aren't predators, they'd usually never support predators. Please lay off these people.
By continuing this cycle of biting the necks of other people for entirely non-sexual stuff when you could *instead* be using that time and effort to actually safeguard the vunerable and detter predators, YOU ARE ADDING TO THE PROBLEM. You're fucking bullying people who're doing no harm.
Meanwhile, the actual NSFW communities dealing with *actual* pornography are given carte-blance to only do easy gestures without making the actual work more inaccessable to minors. You people're fucking burning the wrong people.
Here's a newsflash: Fat children exist. A lot of us were, a lot of us used to be. Fat *people* exist, of all kinds. Races, ages, etc.
Lumping fat characters and people into sexual associations only is fucking O B J E C T I F Y I N G and does NOTHING to stop predators.
Obviously so long as fat characters *are* of the legal age of consent, art with them in NSFW, actually-pornographic art is fine. But those characters are not kids.
Do you know how fucking hypocritical you are for preaching to stop predators but view non-sexual things with kids as sexual? Imagine doing that in a public place. People would immediately think *you're* the predator and you're doing a horrible job hiding it. None of this bullying and in-fighting helps minors avoid getting targetted or exploited by predators. Here's what you can do instead:
1) If a NSFW artist (again, actual-pornography here) or if this stuff is congential to that, make this stuff harder for minors to get to without making it hard for adults to find. Twitter not having 18+ account toggles makes this harder, but that's important at first.
2a) Treat experiences of abuse from the abused seriously. If the person who abused minors is still active and is proven to still enjoy doing their best to get to minors to exploit them, SPEAK OUT about it & hold them accountable. Have the community engage in weeding them out.
2b) Additionally, look out for each other more thoroughly if it turns out anyone in your neck of the woods turns out to be a minor. Discourage minors from having to lie about their ages and with careful moderation and consideration, don't let more predatory people get to them.
3) DRAW THE LINE NOT TO CROSS WHERE IT'S MORE OBVIOUS. Work pertaining to sexual acts shouldn't be accessible to minors. If it's not directly sexual, though, don't view it in the lens of sexuality to a point where you discourage any non-sexual use of it outside of 18+ corners.
And finally, 4) Keep the NSFW (actually-pornographic) corners and the SFW corners seperate. Don't have them mix.
Now, those things I just mentioned? Yes, that stuff takes a lot of work. But y'know what, it should. Bullying and glossing over takes less work, but does nothing.
I was a teenager when I joined the community. I was the kind to desperately want, crave friends and connections. Non-sexual places kept shutting me out and I felt pressured to engage in things I shouldn't. I ended up knowing some predators, some may of wanted to abuse me. And...that's the thing.
It's all good yelling "NO MINORS" in your bio like it's "No Whammys" on "Press Your Luck". It's all good making a non-sexual creator feel isolation and guilt for expressing a childhood version of themselves they wished they had. It won't matter to minors.
By "it won't matter", I mean it's...it's all still not protecting them. All you're doing is making yourself LOOK like you're doing good by yelling what you think is right, when not only is it an oversensitive oversight that hurts non-sexual creators, but it has no practical use.
How many times have we as a community stated important facts on how kids should protect themselves online carefully and not get involved with shady things? Fucking *never*. It's all words and no action. Except for hurting those who aren't doing any hurt for no reason.
Inversely, the more the community takes a staunched approach to non-sexual things as if they ARE NSFW stuff, more and more people get shut away.
Some of those people are minors.
And those minors may end up running to predators just to feel connections. Don't let that happen.
If you care about making it harder for minors to end up getting groomed by predators, think about that. Think how little your actions currently prevent that from happening and how in some cases, you're making it worse.
Those things I told you to put pins on, to bare in mind and those things I made into steps? I believe the community can use those things to actually do *real* effective work protecting minors and disallowing predators, while not compromising NSFW (actually-pornographic) corners. And that stuff takes time. And effort. And work. But you could absolutely end up ensuring minors aren't in danger by helping those things.
Art of completely non-sexual art of fat characters who happen to be kids existing isn't the problem. Get your priorities straight.
As for me, well....I have three characters who happen to be kids who're fat: Nicasio, Nell (when she was a kid) and Corey. They all have refs on this account, in fact. I'd never want them in anything sexual and I'll never make anything that'd suggest or portray that. Because they can't and shouldn't.
These characters, like a lot of my other characters, are self-expressional. They have facets of my own childhood, my childhood wants, childhood dreams and aspirations that I find comforting to explore. They are *not* sexual characters and never will be. I will not retire them.
I will not let people's oversensitive plays at trying to look good while doing no actual, practical work in the very important, serious matters they preach to help get in the way of how I want to express myself, god knows I've had enough repression during my actual childhood. Nobody has to agree with me on this or enjoy the fact I'm standing my ground on this, but I hope that my moralistic intentions come across.
If any of you sexualise these characters or...if you try and start a heated argument about them, even after this journal, you're BLOCKED.
In fact, anyone who is that adamant over doing this whole thing and giving others a hard time like this despite them not doing anything sexual with said characters, I'm blocking you too if I find out. You're not welcome in my life or with how I spent my time here.
It's your own problem if you keep lumping non-sexual art of characters, especially those who're minors, as sexual. And frankly, go fuck yourselves if you do that.
Use all that time and effort to actually PROTECT minors and kick predators out of the community instead.
'Nuff said.
