I think FA mentioned a while back that they'll be implementing name changes, although I'm personally speculating that it'll be an FA+ feature.

It's such a commonplace feature with sites these days (and the past 10 years) it feels weird that FA hasn't made much progress toward it!

I believe talks into name changes were around 2-3 years ago.
I know they have more pressing matters on hand for the site; but something as a name change feature would be very easy to implement so I honestly don't know whats taking them so long, Its a shame that the only way to get the name you wanted back about 4-5 years ago was to claim the name if the account was abandoned and ask if you could get it. Sadly they don't do that anymore as "The feature is coming soon" as I was told. This was back in Nov of 2018 I was told that

Last I heard the trouble was the unique identifier in the database is the username, likely as the primary key too. Standard practices are to use a GUID or index for the primary key. Depending on how the site is written it might take a lot of work to fix this.

I choose the most basic name of all time, and I'm stuck looking at it every time I log on.

I would love to be able to change my username, yes.

we are not yet at that level of technology
